“But in order to get that position, you you lose some of your soul. People despise you. They hate you. I mean, we're talking IRS on steroids, you know. I don't enjoy writing that check to the IRS. They hated him because he was just heartless. He was squeezing them from their last. But Jesus saw something different. In fact, they would never have called him a human being. Pig, scum, whatever. That's what he would have gotten, but Jesus saw him. And in Jesus seeing him, he saw something in Jesus that caused him to see himself in a whole new way. He drops everything and he begins to follow Jesus.”

“Jesus is saying, look, this kingdom of heaven is different than you think. He says, it it takes what is really small and it becomes enormous, but it takes time. It takes time. How many of you know it takes time to do a kingdom work? There are suddenlies all along the way with the deep work of God, it takes time. It's also disproportionate to its size. A little bit of leaven, boom. A little tiny mustard seed, largest of all trees.”

“Matthew's retelling his story, and I think what Matthew was saying is, I will never forget that day, but I will never ever forget that look. Have you ever had somebody look at you and they look beyond your external and they looked into your heart and they called out something in you that nobody else had ever called out. Matthew walks away from his tax booth and he becomes a follower, a disciple, and then he becomes an apostle.”
