Jesus tells the disciples, “Let us go to the other side,” and then enters the boat with them. The journey does not come with a warning that storms are coming, because fear would have made them stay where they were. Jesus sleeps in the boat while the storm gets worse, water comes in, and skilled fishermen reach the end of what their skill set can do. Jesus rises at their cry and simply says, “Peace, be still,” with no dramatics, and the wind and sea obey.
The disciples receive a new revelation in that boat. Jesus is not an ordinary man who happens to be with them. Jesus is the King of kings, the One who made the sea and has the manual to control it. The storm brings discomfort, but the God of all comfort does not allow discomfort to rule those who belong to Him. God causes them to rule over the discomfort because He is present with them.
Storms of life have a source, even when God does not reveal that source. God knows where the storm came from, and His children do not need to beat themselves up trying to trace every reason for their pain. Storms are also seasonal. A season comes, but it passes. A storm can destroy, shake, and trouble, but it cannot remain forever. God promises that after His people have suffered a while, He will perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle them.
The disciples show that storms do not always come because of disobedience. Obedience itself can bring rejection, persecution, and discouragement, yet Jesus remains in the boat. God calls His people to remember what He has already done, to become convicted about His promises, and to stop being clueless about His power. Jesus is not clueless concerning tomorrow, next week, or the end of the year. The devil is the one who is clueless about God’s purpose.
God’s comfort calls His people to rely on His word with humility, honesty, and endurance. Helplessness before God is not weakness but humility that activates grace. Honesty before God builds a deep relationship, because God already knows the struggle, the doubt, and the unforgiveness. Jesus becomes refuge, strength, and survival in every place where the storm rises. His presence drives out panic, surpasses problems, gives peace, and produces rejoicing. The joy rests not merely in miracles, but in names written in heaven and in Christ’s victory that makes His people overcomers.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Every storm has a season Storms can feel like they have taken over everything, but they do not have the final word. God allows seasons to come and go, and He remains present through every one of them. The promise is not that trouble will never rise, but that it will settle under God’s control. [11:10]
- 2. Remember who is in the boat The disciples forgot the One lying beside them because fear made the storm look bigger than Christ. Memory becomes spiritual warfare when believers call to mind what God has already done and what He has promised. Jesus does not become less powerful because circumstances become more violent. [18:49]
- 3. Obedience can still bring storms The disciples were in trouble while doing exactly what Jesus told them to do. Faithful obedience does not guarantee an easy road, because following Christ can bring persecution, rejection, and pressure. Christ’s presence in the storm matters more than an easy journey without Him. [23:18]
- 4. Helplessness before God invites grace Human ability, education, money, and connections can reach their limit in certain storms. Humility begins when a person stops pretending to be self-sufficient and comes honestly before God. Grace works powerfully where helplessness is openly placed in God’s hands. [39:28]
- 5. Rejoice because Christ gives victory Joy cannot rest only on good jobs, money, miracles, or easy circumstances. Christ gives a deeper reason for rejoicing because names are written in heaven and His people belong to Him. An overcomer rejoices because Christ remains Lord in every condition. [1:00:01]
