Kingdom comfort begins with the claim that God himself is the God of all comfort. Comfort does not first depend on people, money, career, marriage, or any human source. God sits at the top of the hierarchy, because God alone can give the kind of comfort that touches the soul and brings peace.

Isaiah 40 gives a sequential command from the Lord. God tells his servants first to preach comfort, then to prepare the way of the Lord, and then to proclaim the glory of God. The people are in Babylon, hurting, suffering, and treated like slaves, yet God does not first send condemnation. God says, “Comfort my people.” The word comes to people in trouble before the circumstances have fully changed, because the comfort is prophetic. It announces what God is about to make real.

The glory of God stands behind the comfort of God. Comfort comes because God’s glory is revealed, and when the glory of God rests on a person, the peace of God also rests there. Comfort and peace are connected. The Lord shows his awesomeness, his omnipotence, his omniscience, and his power as the God of all flesh, so that his people can know nothing is too difficult for him.

Kind words become one pathway of comfort. Pleasant words are like honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones. God does not send his servants to crush hurting people with “because of your sins, that’s why you’re here.” God sends words that edify, words that build, words that carry grace to the hearers.

Jesus Christ is presented as the greatest therapist. Human help may have its place, but no believer is called to put life on a therapist, a friend, or any person. The child of God can lie down, cry out, and give the burden to the Lord. God hears the heart more than the mouth, and God can select somebody unexpected to become the help.

The word of God brings encouragement, but comfort also brings edification. Encouragement gives hope, but edification constructs the whole life: spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, and moral. God-given authority is not for destruction but for construction. Therefore, corrupt words, hurtful memories, bad media, careless podcasts, and places that weaken the soul must not rule a child of God. Helpful things must be tested, chosen, and held fast.
