The body of Christ stands as one family before God, with children from all over the world known and delighted in by the Father. The Spirit makes strangers recognize one another “spirit to spirit,” because citizenship in heaven runs deeper than culture, accent, or flesh. The body also receives fathers in the faith as gifts, not hirelings, and the house is warned not to let familiarity breed contempt toward leaders or one another.

Mark 5 brings Jairus forward as a man who had everything going for him, yet would trade the whole package for one assurance, that his little daughter would live. Jairus, the ruler of the synagogue, leaves status behind and falls at Jesus’ feet, blinded by worry, anxiety, tension, emotion, and fear. His cry has no games in it, no bartering, no deal-making, only the desperate plea of a father who has come to the end of himself.

The Word of God calls that end a beginning in Him. The name Hope becomes more than a family story, because God restores hope to broken households, just as Christ restored hope on the Emmaus road. The emotions that blinded Jairus also blinded those men who said, “We had hoped,” but Jesus pointed them back to the Scriptures until their hearts burned again. The Word can change circumstances, because circumstances cannot change the Word of God.

Jesus then takes control of the story. The messengers of doom and gloom announce death and say not to bother the Teacher anymore, but Jesus ignores them and says, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.” Faith starts by putting cotton wool in the ears, refusing to be ruled by the audible, the visible, or the logical. The solution was there long before the problem ever came, because Jesus was there before the devil ever knocked at the door.

The house of Jairus exposes the noise of unbelief. Jesus sees death differently from the mourners, because from God’s viewpoint death is not disaster but deliverance, not permanent defeat but a step into life. The laughter of the crowd does not move Him; He throws out the doubters with the same force He used to clear His Father’s house. The church is called out of passivity and into the delegated authority of Christ, kicking out what God never intended His people to carry.

John’s head on the breast of Jesus gives the final picture. Judas betrays, John rests, and every disciple stands somewhere along that line. The heartbeat of Jesus is available to the weary, and the storm loses its rule when the ear comes close enough to hear Him.
