Paul roots generosity in the abundance of God. Second Corinthians 9 says that whoever sows sparingly reaps sparingly, and whoever sows generously reaps generously. This is not a gimmick or a guarantee that giving always makes somebody rich. This is God’s promise that generous living opens a person to the blessing and purposes of God.
God supplies the seed, the bread, the time, the gifts, and the resources. God owns it all, and God calls kingdom builders to hold it with open hands. The picture is not of people trying to create abundance out of nothing. The picture is of God supplying lavishly so that his people can abound in every good work. God blesses personally, but God also blesses through people for the sake of his kingdom.
The story of R.G. LeTourneau puts that truth in plain language: “I shovel money out, and God shovels money back to me. And God’s shovel is bigger than mine.” LeTourneau’s reverse tithe was a bold covenant, but the deeper point is that God can do far more with surrendered resources than people can do by gripping them tightly. Generosity is a matter of trust. The question underneath the tithe is simple and searching: Do you trust God?
Proverbs calls God’s people to honor the Lord with their wealth and with the first fruits of all their produce. First fruits means giving God the first and best, not merely whatever remains after every other bill has been paid. God’s provision may not always look easy on paper, but God remains faithful in seasons when the numbers look red and in seasons when they turn black.
Paul also says each person must decide in the heart what to give. Generosity cannot be forced, guilted, or treated like a spiritual transaction. Love must guide the decision. Love for the church, love for missionaries, love for the least of these, and love for the work God is doing through his people give generosity its proper shape.
Malachi invites God’s people to test him in the tithe, trusting that he can open the floodgates of heaven. God multiplies financial gifts, time, spiritual gifts, relationships, opportunities, and kingdom impact. John 3:16 remains the foundation for it all: God loved the world that he gave. God loves a cheerful giver, a hilariously joyful giver, because joyful generosity reflects the heart of the God who first gave everything in Christ.
Key Takeaways
- 1. God supplies the seed and bread. God’s abundance comes before human generosity. Resources, abilities, time, and opportunities are not self-made possessions but gifts entrusted by God. Faithful giving begins when people see themselves not as owners trying to protect everything, but as stewards receiving from God and participating in his work. [42:32]
- 2. First fruits reveal genuine trust. Proverbs calls for the first fruits because trust gives God priority rather than leftovers. The tithe presses beyond budgeting questions into the deeper question of whether God can be trusted with what appears necessary for survival. God’s provision often becomes clearest when obedience comes before visible security. [45:25]
- 3. Love must guide every gift. Paul’s call to decide in the heart guards generosity from compulsion and empty obligation. Love for God’s church, love for those in need, and love for kingdom mission give financial stewardship a holy direction. Giving becomes deeply personal when the heart is connected to the people and ministries being blessed. [52:32]
- 4. God multiplies surrendered resources. God’s multiplication reaches beyond money into friendships, opportunities, spiritual formation, and generational impact. A gift given to strengthen children, support mission, or care for the vulnerable may keep bearing fruit long after the giver can see it. God turns faithful offerings into an extravagant harvest for his kingdom. [59:17]
- 5. Joyful giving reflects God’s own heart. God gave his Son because love gives. The Greek word behind cheerful giving points toward a hilarious, almost giddy joy in participating in God’s generosity. Gratitude changes giving from a burden into a response to salvation, mercy, compassion, and grace already received. [1:03:21]
