The King's True Strength

Matthew 5:5 puts true strength right in the middle of the Beatitudes: “Blessed are the humble,” or meek, “for they will inherit the earth.” The Beatitudes show what true righteousness looks like, and Jesus Himself modeled every one of them. God’s blessing is His approval, and His approval matters far more than the approval people spend so much time chasing.

Meekness is not weakness. Meekness is strength and authority under control. A mature believer does not use power to tear people down, get even, or show everybody who is right. Meekness uses strength for construction, not destruction. Moses carried great authority and was called humble, yet his anger at the rock showed how strength used selfishly can cost dearly.

Steel gives the picture. Steel can be strong, firm, and useful, yet heated steel can become tender. Jesus is both the Lamb of God and the Lion of Judah. Jesus could be gentle as a lamb with sinners, sufferers, and children, while standing firm as a lion when people were kept from God, worship was corrupted, or Satan’s work opposed the Father’s will. Meekness knows the difference between retaliation and righteous action.

Psalm 37 gives the posture of trusting steel: trust in the Lord, delight in the Lord, commit the way to the Lord, be silent before the Lord, wait expectantly for Him, and refrain from anger. Anger out of control becomes a raging fire that brings harm. Anger under the rule of God can protect purity, defend others, and bring about what is right without destroying people.

Jesus showed this strength most clearly at the cross. Jesus did not retaliate when insulted, threatened, beaten, and crucified. Jesus entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly and prayed, “Father, forgive them.” Yet Jesus also drove the money changers from the temple because the Father’s house and the welfare of worshipers mattered. Jesus never used His power for selfish revenge. Jesus used His power in obedience to the Father.

Meekness comes from the Holy Spirit, not self-manufacture. The Spirit has already placed this fruit in believers, but fruit must grow. Jesus calls the weary and burdened to take His yoke and learn from Him, because He is lowly and humble in heart. Mature faith cannot be separated from meekness. Christlike meekness makes the glory of God visible, builds up the body of Christ, and draws people toward the cross.
