9/20/2026 Lord's Day AM Message - "Kept By God" - Proverbs 3:25-26

Solomon brings his son to Proverbs 3:25-26 after grounding him in the God who founded the earth by wisdom and governs all things for his glory and his people’s good. Wisdom means lining life up with the world God made, and wisdom must be kept before the eyes because Christ himself is the wisdom of God. Solomon first speaks of walking securely and sleeping sweetly, but then he turns to the reality that sometimes the thing feared at night arrives in the morning.

Sudden terror is the phone call, diagnosis, loss, or tragedy that comes without warning and sits heavy on the heart. God is not surprised by what surprises his children, even when the pain feels wrong, harmful, and impossible to understand. Solomon does not promise a life insulated from suffering, because the text says, “when it comes,” not if it comes. Christ himself was a man of sorrows, and his people are called to take up their cross in a broken world.

Fear does not get to rule the believer. Fear can enter the car, but fear cannot drive. Fear grows when it is meditated on, when circumstances loom larger than God, and when feelings begin interpreting God’s motives instead of God’s Word. God calls his children to acknowledge real grief and real fear, then take those thoughts captive and test them against what he has said. Christ’s death, God’s covenant faithfulness, and God’s promise never to forsake his people speak more truth than fear ever can.

The Lord becomes the confidence of his people, not a better outcome, an easier road, or the hope that circumstances will quickly change. God may answer prayers by removing the thorn, but God may also leave his children in the suffering so that his sufficient grace becomes more precious than comfort. The valley is not proof of abandonment, because God meets his people there. The waters, rivers, and fire may come, but they will not finally overwhelm those whom God keeps.

God’s keeping is not measured by what remains after loss. Suffering can take health, possessions, plans, loved ones, and even earthly life, but suffering cannot take a believer from Christ. Christ bore the ruin of the wicked on the cross for sinners who deserved that judgment. Jesus gives eternal life to his sheep, and no sudden terror, no grave, and no enemy can snatch them from his hand. The grave can receive the Christian, but it cannot keep the Christian.
