Paul answers the question that grace always raises: if salvation is received rather than achieved, why not live any way a person wants? Grace does not leave a person unchanged, because no person is ever simply free and self-directed. Slavery to sin takes the shape of whatever gives a person deepest significance and security. Career, approval, romance, achievement, thinness, money, or control can become spiritual masters, and those masters rule through inordinate desires for good things. Anger, fear, and sadness expose the places where good things have become ultimate things.
Paul’s first commandment logic leaves no middle ground. God is God, or something else is god. Sin reigns when the heart says, “I’ve got to have this,” and then that thing begins to dictate the person’s life. The old masters may look like freedom, but they punish their servants and leave them increasingly out of control.
Union with Christ gives the resources for change. Baptism marks those who have given themselves to Christ, and Paul says they have been engrafted into the root of his life. Christ’s past becomes their past: his death deals with sin’s guilt, and his perfect life becomes the determining factor in their relationship with the Father. Christ’s future also becomes their future: the same resurrection power that will renew the whole cosmos has already entered their lives by the Holy Spirit.
Christ therefore does not merely make a decent little cottage a bit more livable. Christ rebuilds the whole house into a palace where he intends to live. Grace gives far more than inner peace, a little reorientation, or a spiritual pickup. Grace brings a person into the cosmic rebirth that will someday make everything sad come untrue.
New identity must be lived out daily. The old self was crucified, but sin’s reign does not disappear automatically because old habits still speak with the voice of a former master. Paul says to count oneself dead to sin and alive to God. Augustine’s answer to his old mistress captures the point: “It is I, but it is not I.” The person united to Christ no longer has to be driven by the approval, affection, security, or success once required to fill the black hole.
Christ’s selfless love finally makes surrender possible. Every false master takes and takes, but Jesus became a servant and gave his life as a ransom. His service alone is perfect freedom.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Every heart serves a master Slavery to sin is not limited to obvious wickedness. A good thing becomes a cruel master when it becomes the thing a person must have in order to feel secure, valuable, or alive. The heart always offers itself somewhere, and whatever receives that offering eventually gives orders. [08:18]
- 2. Overdesire reveals the hidden idol Epi-anger, epi-fear, and epi-sadness reveal more than difficult circumstances. They show that something threatened or lost has become ultimate in the heart. The path toward change begins with honest recognition of the particular master that has been controlling the person. [12:40]
- 3. Christ’s past and future become theirs Union with Christ means more than pardon for past failures. His death, righteousness, resurrection, and future reign become the believer’s inheritance by grace. The power that will renew the cosmos has already begun its work in an ordinary human life. [24:27]
- 4. New identity must be consciously lived The old self has truly been crucified, yet old patterns do not vanish by accident. Faith must repeatedly count itself dead to sin and alive to God, especially when old masters call for obedience. Freedom grows as a person remembers, “It is I, but it is not I.” [29:59]
- 5. Christ’s service creates real freedom False gods demand everything and finally punish their servants. Christ alone gives himself first, laying aside his glory to bring sinners into the Father’s house. Surrender to that Master is not abuse or loss, because his service alone is perfect freedom. [41:30]
