KEEP ME FROM EVIL: HOUSE OF PRAYER WEEK 4

Prayer stands right at the center because prayer is what transforms a life. Prayer is not just a religious add-on or something saved for the last minute. Prayer is the thing that gets a person through the hurdle, through the circumstance, through the dry season, and through the mess. The Jabez prayer shows that God is good, that God blesses, that God enlarges territory, that God’s hand stays with his people, and that God keeps them from evil.

The line “keep me from evil” opens up two kinds of evil. The first kind is the evil a person gets into through temptation, disobedience, and wandering off the track. The fear of the Lord becomes like the little barrier on the racetrack, keeping a runner from slipping into the snares on either side. The enemy does not always come with something obviously dark. Sometimes the snare is just wasted time, an easier road, more money, or something that looks good but pulls a person away from the Lord’s will.

Jonah and Samson show what happens when a person goes off track. Jonah had a clear word from God and ran the opposite direction. Samson had simple boundaries and broke them one by one. Yet both stories also show the redemptive side of the Lord. Repentance can put a person straight back on the track. A simple “Lord, I’m sorry, I messed up” can become the way out of the belly of the whale or the darkness of blindness.

The second kind of evil comes not from disobedience but from trials. Job shows that even a righteous man can face evil. James says those trials test faith, produce patience, and make a person complete, lacking nothing. The hurdle is not strange. The test has an end date. God fed Israel with manna in the wilderness to humble them, test them, and do them good in the end.

The enemy loves a silent Christian. Jabez’s life changed when he spoke up. Jesus overcame temptation by saying, “It is written.” Faith is voice activated, and life and death are in the power of the tongue. Caleb and Joshua entered the land because they spoke agreement with God’s promise while a whole generation died speaking death.

Jesus becomes the final picture in Gethsemane. Jesus did not feel good, but Jesus prayed anyway. His whole lifestyle of prayer strengthened him for the one moment when he could say, “Not my will, but your will be done.” A life of prayer, even five minutes at a time, becomes the way God strengthens his people to overcome evil and not lose heart.
