Justified by Faith

Paul comes at the Galatians hard because the gospel is worth guarding. The Judaizers were trying to tell Gentiles that Jesus was not enough unless they also became more Jewish, got circumcised, kept the law, and did certain things to be saved. Paul says no, and Abraham already showed that the blessing of God was meant for everybody, Jew and Gentile alike. The gospel does not say, clean up first and then come to Christ. Jesus straightens the path, Jesus cleans the sinner, and Jesus fixes the sin problem that no person can fix alone.

The truth about sin cuts everybody down to the same size. There are lost sinners and saved sinners, and nobody has the capacity to straighten himself out. Repentance means turning from sin, but the turn has to be toward Jesus, because a human heart left to itself will just trade one sin for another. The Holy Spirit has to draw, because apart from that drawing nobody would come.

The responsibility of parents shows how serious spiritual training is. Children left to their own choice will often pick pajamas and video games over church, just like adults left to themselves will pick sin. The call to train up a child is not about parents being buddies first. Faithful love teaches, leads, shows up, and leaves memories that stick, like a father saying in the garden, “We’ve done all we can do. It’s in God’s hands now.”

Jesus reveals sin by his holiness. Lost sinners often do not know how filthy sin is until they stand beside the One without sin, like dingy teeth beside a whitening chart. Once Jesus is truly known, life is different, because being born again is not self-improvement. Baptism matters as a sacred act for Christians, but nothing magical happens in the water. The change happens before the tank, when Jesus becomes Lord and Savior.

False gospels still say that enough faith, enough works, or enough rule-keeping will earn blessing. Paul says the law cannot save, because nobody can live by it. Jesus saves by grace, and works come because salvation has happened, not so salvation can happen. The Christian life starts at new birth, then grows in love, service, and obedience, not to earn God’s love, but because God’s love has already been given.
