Justification by Faith (Romans 1:18-32) The Pagan World is Guilty

Romans 1:18-32 sets the bad news beside the good news, because the gospel cannot be preached without both. Paul says the righteous shall live by faith, and that salvation has always been by faith alone, not by works, not by religious performance, not by animal sacrifices, not by keeping the rules well enough. God reveals His righteousness in the gospel, but God also reveals His wrath against those who suppress the truth.

General revelation makes God’s existence and righteousness plain. Creation itself shows His eternal power and divine nature, and conscience tells human beings that there is a right and there is a wrong. The pagan world is not just ignorant. The pagan world refuses to acknowledge God, plugs its ears, pushes the truth down, and then tries to live as its own god. Paul says that leaves every human being without excuse.

The wrath of God in Romans 1 is not first the final judgment at the end of time. The wrath of God here is God handing people over to the sins they have chosen, so that the sin itself becomes part of the judgment. God gives them up, gives them over, lets them taste the bondage and darkness of what they demanded. That is heavy, but it is still mercy in a strange way, because God’s righteousness can still be seen and the sinner can still turn to Christ.

The exchange is the heart of the problem. The pagan world exchanges the truth of God for a lie, worships the creature rather than the Creator, and trades the glory of the immortal God for created things. Secular humanism may not carve idols for the mantle, but it still worships humanity and says, “I can be whatever I want to be.” Romans says no. God made the call, God made creation, God made male and female, and God’s order is the way of blessing.

Paul then names the results: fornication, dishonorable passions, sexual sins against nature, and a whole ugly list of unrighteousness, covetousness, malice, envy, strife, deceit, gossip, slander, pride, disobedience, faithlessness, heartlessness, and ruthlessness. Christians can be sucked into those same patterns, even though they are not enslaved to sin in the same way. Justification declares the believer righteous, and sanctification keeps changing the believer until glory.

The gospel still calls sinners to Jesus Christ. Special revelation, the truth of Scripture, tells what creation cannot tell: Jesus saves, and justification comes by faith. The unbelieving world is under the wrath of God, but there is a way of escape. The church must not live like pagans, and the church must tell neighbors that liberty and freedom are found in Christ.
