Romans 5 opens with the verdict justified by faith and the fruit peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 13 adds the announcement through this Man is preached forgiveness, and by Him all that believe are justified from all things from which the law of Moses could never justify. Justification therefore stands as God’s own courtroom word. The text says not probation, not delay, but a present standing of grace and a sure hope of glory.

The need for justification sits on every soul. Scripture says not a just man upon the earth that doeth good and sinneth not, and all have sinned. The image of a chain with ten links makes the point. If one link breaks, the man falls. Whether one link or all ten, the fall is certain. Sin may show up in different degrees, but guilt before a holy God is universal.

Justification itself means cleared of all guilt, freed from every charge. The picture in the text reads like an acquittal. Yet God does what no human judge can do. Forgiveness admits guilt; a judge cannot declare a guilty man righteous. God both forgives and justifies, removing the guilt and fixing the sinner as if he had never committed a single sin in his life. That is no probation. That is a clean record.

God is the justifier. Not church, not baptismal water, not good company, not a promise to do better. When God justifies, Paul says, who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect. In God’s court, the justified one stands with no charge left to bring.

The timing of justification is now. Much more then, being now justified by His blood. Salvation does not wait on a process. When faith grasps Christ, God gives a new standing on the spot. Uncle Bud said he could not read his name when he went down, but he could read his title clear to a mansion when he got up. That is what now means.

The means of justification is His blood. Without shedding of blood is no remission. The cross answers every charge. The Judge laid iniquity on His Son; the Son bore the guilt and shed His blood. So the song is right. Nothing but the blood of Jesus makes a sinner clean and whole.

The way to make this one’s own is faith. Bible faith is more than head nods. Faith trusts, depends, and relies on Christ alone. Not baptism, not membership, not the best moral record. God says the cross is enough. The sinner says it is enough for God, and it is enough for me. On Christ the solid Rock, faith stands.
