There was a steady progression of compromise in the life of lot the nephew of Abraham. He went from looking towards Sodom, that's in Genesis Chapter 13 Verse 10, to pitching his tent toward Sodom that's in verse 12 of Genesis 13, to living in Sodom that's in Genesis Chapter 14 verse 12, and then losing everything when Sodom was attacked. [00:03:39]

Lot himself was a righteous man who was grieved by the sin that he saw around him again that's second Peter chapter 2 verses 7 and 8. But tragically because of the deep seated compromise in lot very few of his family and none of his friends in Sodom were spared God's judgment. [00:04:46]

The men of Sodom thought that they were pursuing pleasure, and they didn't care that lot thought it was wicked. And this difference in their standards points to a very important question: if the culture abandons the Bible's guide for sexual morality, if the Bible is thrown out and said well no we don't want to say what the Bible says about sexual morality... [00:20:08]

Friends, when it comes to sex to Simply do as one pleases is not enough. Humanity needs a higher morality, and when you come right down to it, it's the morality of the Bible that's going to make the difference. Lots trying to reason with this crowd that has surrounded his house and then he makes a shocking offer you saw this when I read it in verse 8. [00:21:23]

Lot's life shows us that it's possible to have a saved soul and a wasted life. Lot would be rescued he's going to come out of this alive, he's going to have nothing, he's going to be ashamed but he's going to be alive, but his life would accomplish almost nothing. [00:31:22]

The Angels urged lot to hurry saying arise take your wife and your two daughters who are here lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city and while he lingered the men took hold of his hand, his wife's hand and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. [00:32:08]

Friends, a lack of urgency to obey God is a common sign of compromise, it's a common sign of a backslidden condition. And what did the men do? They took hold of his hand and they dragged him out. Let me read you a quote from Charles Spurgeon that great preacher Victorian England, he said this... [00:34:11]

Lot's wife was turned to a pillar of salt because she looked back behind after the Angels had specifically warned do not look behind you that's in verse 17 of the same chapter. Friends if you're ever in such a situation receiving a Divine and Angelic deliverance and that angel or the Lord tells you do not look behind you... [00:43:03]

Lot's wife looked back most likely because she had a love for Sodom and a great rejection a great regret I should say for Sodom's Destruction. Morris says in his commentary the word looked back has the connotation of looking intently. Henry Moore said that it might possibly be rendered lagged back or even returned back. [00:43:35]

Lot's compromise affected far more than himself it affected his whole family. So verse 33. So they made their father drink wine that night and the firstborn went in and lay with her father and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. On the next day that the firstborn said to the younger indeed I lay with my father last night... [00:49:01]

Lot's life ended in ruin regarding the past regarding the present and the future all because of his love for the world and the compromise that came from that love for the world. And let's conclude we're just thinking of a couple of ways that Genesis chapter 19 points to Jesus Christ I'll give you three ways I'm sure we could think of more... [00:52:44]

Like the Angels, Jesus defends his people. Do you remember that when the depraved mob was surrounding lot's house the angels went out and defended lot defended the people of God and in John chapter 18 verse 4 when Jesus was arrested at the Garden of Gethsemane he consciously went forward to meet the arresting Army he put himself between them and his disciples...
