Judgement and Mercy - with Richard Stancliffe and SBC

Amos 9 brings the book to a tough but hopeful finish. Amos has already shown Israel offering superficial worship, exploiting the poor, taking religious duties as a burden, and treating God’s word as something that could just wash over them. God had warned through visions, like the basket of summer fruit, that their unfaithfulness and greed would bring sudden judgment and even a famine of hearing his word.

God now stands beside the altar, and there is no dialogue this time. The command is blunt: “Strike the capitals.” The very place where false worship had been going on will come crashing down. God says none of those who flee will get away, whether they dig down to Sheol, climb up to heaven, hide on Carmel, go to the seafloor, or get dragged into captivity. God’s eye, which normally means protection, is turned here “for harm and not for good,” because unrepentant sin really does meet his judgment.

Amos’ doxology shows why no one can escape. God touches the earth and it melts. God summons the waters of the sea and pours them out. The heavens and the earth are his to do with as he wills. Israel’s pretense is exposed, because they had thought, “We’re God’s people,” as if covenant privilege meant exemption from obedience. God corrects that delusion. He rules all nations, and he will judge Israel as the sinful kingdom.

God’s sieve, though, does not mean total destruction. God will shake Israel among the nations, but not a pebble will fall to the ground. The sinners who say disaster will never overtake them will die, yet the faithful will be preserved. The promise then breaks through: “I will restore the fallen shelter of David.” The rickety, divided, ruined kingdom will be repaired and rebuilt.

James in Acts 15 takes this promise and shows its fulfilment in Jesus Christ, the Son of David. The restored tent of David means Gentiles too are called by God’s name. The harvest picture then overflows with blessing: the plowman overtakes the reaper, the mountains drip with sweet wine, ruined cities are rebuilt, vineyards are planted, and God’s people are planted securely. Jesus Christ alone satisfies the wrath of God and gives the grace needed for a transformed life. The call to repentance is not empty religion, but faithful obedience, care for the needy, love for Scripture, and faith fixed on the Lord Jesus Christ.
