Finding Joy in the Journey: Eyes on Eternity

Happiness sounds pretty simple when life is lined up right. Health feels good, family feels good, money is not a stress, relationships are not broken, kids and grandkids are doing well, and even the dog cleans up after itself. But brokenness does not ask permission before it moves in. Life in a fallen world means those seasons of easy happiness are fleeting, and if joy depends on circumstances staying pleasant, failure has already been built into the plan.

The contrast between being lost and being found shows up in where a person is looking. Lost people put hope in circumstances, and this broken world will not hold that weight. Found people have discovered life in Christ, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and a grace that does not let them down. When a person is lost, all that can be seen is where that person is. When a person is found, the only thing that finally matters is where that person is going.

John Bradford’s death makes that difference plain. Prison, false accusation, and a burning stake did not get the final word over him because his eyes were not fixed on the fire in front of him. His words to young John Leaf, “Be of good comfort, brother, for we shall have a merry supper with the Lord tonight,” show a man looking at his destination, not just his circumstances.

Scripture keeps pressing that same truth. Romans says suffering can grow endurance, character, and hope because God has poured his love into the heart by the Holy Spirit. James calls trials an opportunity for great joy because tested faith grows up. Jesus tells his disciples that the world will bring trials and sorrows, but he has overcome the world. Peter says faith is tested like gold, and Paul, even in chains, can say that to live is Christ and to die is even better.

Joy in the journey comes from seeing circumstances three ways. Circumstances are temporary, even when the storm is so loud and the waves are so high that no land can be seen. Circumstances are opportunity, because endurance, wisdom, and ministry often get forged in the fire. Circumstances are a passageway, not the destination. Life carries many roles, missions, and responsibilities, but God created his people for eternity with him.

The apostles rejoiced after being flogged because suffering for Jesus was not wasted. Persecuted believers can pray through tears because the kingdom of God is more real than the threats around them. Joy is shaped by where the eyes are set.
