Washed and Restored: Finding Joy After Sin

David comes to Psalm 51 after adultery and murder believing that he has messed things up so bad they can never be fixed. Psalm 51:7-9 answers that fear with a God who can take what looks permanently stained and make it “whiter than snow.” David does not play down what he did. He calls it sin, iniquity, and transgression because sin is not a small thing or just another day in life. Sin is appalling, disgusting, and putrid before a holy God.

Hyssop carries David’s mind back to cleansing ceremonies. Hyssop put Passover blood on the doorposts, marked the cleansing of lepers, and belonged to the purification of those who had touched death. David asks God to purge him with hyssop because he wants God to do what those ceremonies pictured: make him clean again. God alone can forgive sins, and Christ alone can save. The washing David asks for is not partial cleanup. God can remove the dirt of sin completely and cover a ruined life with the pure white of fresh snow.

David also wants joy and gladness again because sin has taken them away. Sin does not bring joy. Sin brings guilt, punishment, regret, pain, and the heavy conviction of God. The broken bones in verse 8 picture the hurt of God’s discipline. God’s children feel that conviction because the Holy Spirit will not let sin sit comfortably in their lives. A person who can keep sinning with no guilt needs to check that relationship with God.

The broken-bone picture also shows that forgiveness does not always remove every consequence. David receives forgiveness, yet David still faces painful consequences from his adultery and murder. Sin left untreated can warp a life like a bone that heals crooked. Confession treats sin correctly by agreeing with God: “What I did was wrong.” God brings healing and joy, even when consequences remain.

David asks God to hide His face from his sins and blot out every iniquity. God promises to remove transgressions as far as east is from west and to remember sins no more. David repeats that request because guilt has overwhelmed him, just as hurting people often repeat the same prayer when they do not know what else to say. The Holy Spirit helps that weakness and carries unspoken groanings to God.

God can forgive what seems impossible to forgive. David’s failure does not stop God from restoring David. God calls guilty people to stop excusing sin, humbly ask for cleansing, and believe that His forgiveness is real.
