The harvest comes not to those who hoard seed but to those who plant it in uncertain soil. [41:41]

Sermon Summary

Genesis 11 opens Abraham’s journey before Genesis 12 ever gives the famous call. Terah’s family line places Abram in a home marked by loss, barrenness, and idolatry, not in a clean spiritual starting point. Joshua says Terah and the ancestors “worshipped other gods,” and tradition pictures Terah as an idol carver. God’s grace steps into that kind of house and turns a man from an idol-carving family into the father of many nations.

Abraham’s beginning says plainly that a past does not limit God’s future. God can use somebody with sin, failure, addiction, hypocrisy, divorce, family mess, and all the rest. Abraham proves that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things for his glory. The grace of God can make one life the turning point of an entire family tree.

Genesis 11 also shows that God had already been working before Abram understood what came next. Terah set out toward Canaan, but the family settled in Haran, halfway to the place God intended. God’s word to Abram in Genesis 12 sounds like, “Let’s get going,” because God did not call him to settle halfway.

The journey of faith also brings the incredible surprises of God. Abram’s calling was, “Go, and I will show you later.” His promised child came when the whole thing sounded laughable. His commitment was tested when God asked for Isaac, the thing most precious to him. God’s way often refuses the neat, tidy, comfortable, and secure life that people naturally prefer.

The waterfall picture captures the point. The top of the falls becomes that moment where comfort and commitment part ways. The question becomes whether a person will play it safe or hold a breath and go all in. God is calling Millbrook to a fresh journey of faith, not a journey of facts, finances, debate, analysis, or business as usual Christianity.

The blessings of God stand on the other side of grace-filled obedience and surprising faith. Abraham’s life is not finally a story about a great man of God, but a great God of this man. Christ deserves more than checked boxes, crossed arms, and religious consumption. The call of God presses for a people on fire for Jesus, ready to say, “Count me in,” and ready to go all in for him.

And I really believe this by the power of the Holy Spirit, that God's coming to somebody and saying, look, you settled halfway, you settled part away. They went part of the way. They didn't stay all the way in Ur. They went part of the way. They went halfway, but they settled part of the way to God's final assignment. And listen, God just put this very clearly on my heart this morning. There's somebody this morning that needs to hear this word from God. That God called you to Canaan and you've settled in Haran.”
