The road trip’s value wasn’t in the destination but the shared moments along the way. Detours became opportunities for connection, laughter, and unexpected grace. Just as two friends savored extra miles together, faith journeys thrive when we embrace interruptions as divine invitations. Life’s "wrong addresses" often lead to richer stories, deeper relationships, and a clearer sense of God’s presence in the mundane. The goal matters less than who walks beside us. [46:17]

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Even in Eden’s flawless beauty, God declared human aloneness as the first "not good." Community wasn’t an afterthought but woven into creation’s fabric. The garden’s perfection included shared purpose, vulnerability, and mutual care. Our longing for companionship reflects God’s image within us – a holy echo of the Trinity’s eternal relationship. Isolation contradicts divine design, while togetherness mirrors heaven’s rhythm. [49:16]

Christ’s ministry moved through fishing boats and Pharisee dinners, temple courts and lonely mountains. His relational rhythm blended crowds, close friends, and solitary prayer. The Messiah who dined with sinners still makes space for both Zacchaeus in the tree and Peter on the water. Our journeys become Christ-shaped when we embrace his full spectrum of connection – from festive tables to quiet hillsides. [58:10]

Dorothy’s yellow brick road companions weren’t selected but discovered – a mismatched group proving God often writes better stories than we’d script. The tin man’s rusted joints and scarecrow’s empty head became gifts when shared. Our spiritual geography gets color from unlikely travelers: the coworker who asks hard questions, the quiet neighbor who notices our weariness, the child who interrupts our hurry. [55:24]

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Lifetime companions anchor us when seasons change and reasons blur. Yet even when human friends fade, the Savior who promised "always" remains. The journey of faith can easily become all about the destination, just like a long drive where a person only wants to arrive already. The armchair road trip shows a different kind of journey, because the wrong address, the extra driving, and the time in the car became a gift rather than an inconvenience. The presence of a good friend changed the whole trip, turning delay into connection and frustration into a story worth remembering.

My Spiritual Geography names the highs and lows, the mountaintops and wildernesses, but the path also includes the people to the right and to the left. God has not made the journey to be walked alone. Genesis 2 says that even in the perfect garden, with perfect creation, “it is not good for man to be alone.” Community is not just a nice extra, it is part of being made in the image of God.

Hebrews calls God’s people to keep meeting together, to encourage one another, and to “provoke one another to love and good deeds.” Ecclesiastes says two are better than one because one can lift the other up when falling, and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Revelation shows the end of the journey as God dwelling with his people, a garden city of perfect community where God is with them and they are with one another.

Jesus gives the clearest picture of this shared life. Jesus spends time with family, disciples, crowds, sinners, saints, religious leaders, and also with his Father in lonely places. Jesus commands love for God and love for neighbor, and love for neighbor cannot happen while ignoring the neighbor on the path.

The Wizard of Oz becomes a picture of the journey home. Dorothy never planned to travel with the scarecrow, the tin man, and the cowardly lion, but the story needed them. God, the author of the story, also knows who needs to be on the road.

The people along the way may be there for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Reason people bring direction and help at key moments. Season people share real life for a time, then growth may require different paths. Lifetime people stay through mountaintops, valleys, wilderness, easy days, and hard days. Above them all, Jesus remains the lifelong friend and journeyman who says, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Some will become fellow pilgrims alongside us that we get to know for a while. And some people along the way will be the saints that help lead us forward, and we are all sinners that we can journey together. That poem by Brian Chorker has helped me to understand those I journey with a bit more, that there are some that I am with for a reason, some that I am with for a season, and some that I will journey with for a lifetime. Because no matter where we are, God has placed others around us to help influence us and our journey, and for us to help others in their journey too.”
