Paul’s words in Ephesians 2:10 give children and grown-ups something worth holding onto: “God made me on purpose and for a purpose.” The verse calls God’s people his masterpiece, created anew in Christ Jesus for good things he planned long ago. A masterpiece is not an accident. God knew what he was doing in creating every personality, ability, strength, and difference.
The three ropes picture a simple truth. They were all ropes, made from the same material, but they were not the same length. Difference does not mean wrong. Different does not mean less. God did not make a mistake when he made somebody quiet or loud, athletic or artistic, great at math or convinced math is punishment for Adam and Eve. Comparison makes people wish they were somebody else’s rope, but purpose begins when they recognize what God has already placed inside them.
The juggling balls picture another part of that purpose. Gifts are not always instantly visible, and they are not always immediately developed. People drop the ball, pick it up, practice, fail, learn, and eventually grow into what they could not do before. God gives gifts that may never appear on a stage: noticing the lonely person, listening well, encouraging someone on a bad day, making people feel included, helping, leading, creating, and bringing joy. Gifts are not given so somebody can look impressive. God gives them so that they can bless somebody else.
The good things prepared by God also do not require waiting until adulthood. God invites children to make a difference at a cafeteria table, beside a hurting friend, in the face of bullying, while helping at home, and even when a brother or sister is really annoying. Making a difference is often simply doing the next good thing God has put in front of somebody.
Ephesians 2:10 has no expiration date. Life brings mistakes, disappointments, closed doors, changed relationships, and the fear that purpose has somehow passed by. But purpose does not begin with talent, career, title, paycheck, or success. God creates people anew in Christ Jesus, and purpose begins when life belongs to him. Baptism says not, “I have figured everything out,” but, “My life belongs to Jesus.”
Jesus came, lived the life sinners never could live, died for sin, and rose again. Christ forgives, makes people new, and invites them into the life God created them to live. Knowing God, finding freedom, making a difference, and discovering purpose are not separate destinations. Every part of that journey begins with Jesus. It is all about Jesus.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God made every person uniquely. God’s masterpiece language leaves no room for the idea that somebody’s differences are accidental defects. Comparison turns another person’s gifts, appearance, or life into a standard that was never meant to define anyone else. Purpose starts when a person receives God’s intentional design rather than trying to become somebody else. [19:25]
- 2. Gifts grow through practice and failure. God-given ability does not always arrive as instant excellence. Dropping the ball can become part of learning how to carry a gift faithfully. Gifts mature when people keep developing them, not to gain attention, but to become a blessing to others. [26:56]
- 3. Purpose is bigger than a career. A job can be one place where purpose is lived out, but it cannot contain the whole calling of God. Titles can change, careers can end, and seasons can shift without canceling the good things God prepared. God’s purpose remains active because it rests in Christ, not in a paycheck. [29:06]
- 4. No one is too young to matter. God’s invitation to make a difference often comes in ordinary moments of kindness, courage, service, and attention. A lonely child, a hurting friend, or a difficult situation can become a place where God’s love takes visible form. The next good thing in front of a person may be far more significant than it appears. [34:24]
- 5. Purpose begins when life belongs to Jesus. Purpose is not first the search for one big meaningful thing to do. Christ makes people new and calls them into what he is already doing around them. The deepest question is not what somebody will do with life, but who that life belongs to.
