Joseph's Journey: Embracing God's Purpose in Adversity
Devotional
Day 1: God's Presence in Our Trials
Joseph's life is a vivid illustration of God's unwavering presence, even amidst adversity. Sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned, Joseph's journey was fraught with challenges. Yet, he recognized that God was with him every step of the way, orchestrating events for a greater purpose. This understanding transformed his narrative from one of victimhood to a divine mission. Joseph's story encourages us to trust in God's plan, even when circumstances seem unfavorable, knowing that He is present in every chapter of our lives. [01:24:52]
Genesis 39:21-23 (ESV): "But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it. The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph's charge, because the Lord was with him. And whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed."
Reflection: Think of a current trial you are facing. How can you invite God to reveal His presence and purpose in this situation today?
Day 2: Recognizing Divine Purpose
The biography of the blessed is marked by an awareness of God's purpose in our lives. Joseph understood that his trials were not random but part of a divine mission to preserve life. This perspective invites us to see our own lives as part of a larger narrative orchestrated by God. By recognizing His hand in our circumstances, we can find meaning and direction, even in the midst of challenges. [01:25:13]
Jeremiah 29:11-13 (ESV): "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart."
Reflection: Reflect on a past challenge where you later saw God's purpose. How can this perspective help you trust Him with your current circumstances?
Day 3: Writing Chapters of Faith
Our life stories should include chapters titled "For God," "And God," and "But God," signifying His preservation, preparation, and prosperity in our lives. These chapters remind us that God's hand is at work, even when we cannot see it. By acknowledging His role in our stories, we can live with greater faith and confidence, knowing that He is guiding us toward His purposes. [01:26:30]
Psalm 37:23-24 (ESV): "The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand."
Reflection: Identify a "But God" moment in your life where He intervened. How can you use this memory to strengthen your faith in His ongoing work in your life?
Day 4: Legacy of Resilience
Reflecting on Black History Month, we are reminded of the resilience and faith of those who came before us. Despite facing immense challenges, God's presence was evident in their journey, preserving and prospering them in ways that continue to impact us today. This legacy of resilience encourages us to trust in God's plan, knowing that He is writing a story of blessing and purpose in our lives. [01:28:27]
Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV): "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."
Reflection: Consider the legacy of faith in your own family or community. How can you honor this legacy by living with resilience and trust in God's promises?
Day 5: Trusting in God's Sovereignty
Joseph's story encourages us to trust in God's sovereignty, knowing that He is writing a story of blessing and purpose in our lives. Even when we face challenges, we can have confidence that God is working all things together for our good. By surrendering to His will, we can experience peace and assurance, knowing that He is in control. [01:35:40]
Isaiah 46:9-10 (ESV): "Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.'"
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you struggle to trust God's sovereignty? How can you take a step today to surrender this area to Him and trust in His perfect plan?
Sermon Summary
In today's reflection, we delve into the profound narrative of Joseph from Genesis 45, exploring the theme of "The Biography of the Blessed." Joseph's life is a testament to the complexity and richness of human experience, marked by both trials and triumphs. His story is not one of pristine perfection but rather a tapestry woven with moments of betrayal, hardship, and ultimately, divine purpose. Joseph's journey from being sold into slavery by his brothers to becoming a ruler in Egypt underscores the mysterious ways in which God orchestrates our lives for a greater purpose.
Joseph's life teaches us that the biography of the blessed is not defined by the absence of adversity but by the presence of God in every chapter. Despite being sold into Egypt, falsely accused, and imprisoned, Joseph recognized that it was God who sent him ahead to preserve life. This realization reframes his narrative from one of victimhood to one of divine mission. Joseph's ability to see God's hand in his circumstances challenges us to view our own lives through a similar lens, recognizing that our stories are part of a larger divine narrative.
As we reflect on our own biographies, we are reminded that they should include chapters titled "For God," "And God," and "But God." These chapters signify God's preservation in unfavorable circumstances, His preparation for us to be a blessing to others, and His power to prosper us even in the most unlikely places. Our lives, like Joseph's, are case studies that showcase God's faithfulness and sovereignty.
In the context of Black History Month, this message resonates deeply, reminding us of the resilience and faith of those who came before us. Despite the challenges faced by our ancestors, God's hand was evident in their journey, preserving and prospering them in ways that continue to impact us today. As we navigate our own challenges, we are encouraged to trust in God's plan, knowing that He is writing a story of blessing and purpose in our lives.

Joseph's life teaches us that the biography of the blessed is not defined by the absence of adversity but by the presence of God in every chapter. Despite being sold into Egypt, falsely accused, and imprisoned, Joseph recognized that it was God who sent him ahead to preserve life. [01:16:05]
Joseph's story is not one that comes out of the pristine and pretty. Joseph grew up in a home where his daddy had four baby mamas and pretty much they all knew about it. Joseph grew up in a home where all he had to do was look back to his grandfather and his great grandfather and he could see people who had done some terrible and some dastardly things. [01:22:21]
The biography of the Blessed doesn't always begin with the prettiest of pictures. All of our lives are complex. We have our good days and we have our bad days. We have the things that we're proud of and we have the things that we don't want anybody to know about. [01:23:52]
No matter what your life story is or what it has been, let the theme of the biography of your life be simply this: God. The biography of the Blessed ought to mirror and reminisce our sojourn in this land because here in Genesis 45, after they've sold him, after he's been put in prison, after people have lied on him and made all kinds of spurious accusations against him, after he has done nothing but try and help people by interpreting their dreams and all of a sudden they forget about him when he says just remember me, all of that God was still with him. [01:25:13]
Your story, my story, and our story as a people, the biography of Our Lives, the biography of the Blessed ought to have no less than three chapters in it. When we look back over our lives, we ought to have a chapter that says for God. [01:27:10]
God will preserve us even in unfavorable circumstances. Everything was not favorable for Joseph, but when he looked back over all that he had been through, he said no, no, no, you didn't send me here, God sent me here. Why? Because he sent me here to do something specific to preserve life. [01:28:27]
God preserves us and prepares us to be a blessing even to those whom we have not seen. God is preserving your life and my life because he sees not only the now but he sees the future. God is preparing and preserving your life because there are generations that, if time should last, are not yet born that need to know, be able to look back and say, well, my great grandmother and my great grandfather and my uncle and my cousin, I see what God did in their life and now I believe that God can do anything for me. [01:30:04]
In all of our biographies, there ought to be a for God that God preserves us in unfavorable circumstances. There ought to be a chapter and God that God will prepare us and preserve us even to be a blessing to those we have not seen. [01:35:40]
God will also prosper us in Pharaoh's house. Did you hear what I said? No, no, no, no, did you hear what God's word said? Here it is, I'm in my text, so now it is not you who sent me here but God and has made me a father to Pharaoh. Look at that, a slave telling the master I'm your daddy. [01:36:08]
God has prospered us in Pharaoh's house. Do you realize, my brothers and sisters, that God has prospered us? I'm talking about we have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered. God has prospered us, yes, in Pharaoh's house. [01:37:40]
God will prosper us not outside of Pharaoh's house. God is still there, but he says you can get in Pharaoh's house, you can get in the bad situation, you can find yourself no matter whether it's your fault or not, but there is no limit to my power to prosper you. [01:42:22]
The biography of the blessed never has you as the theme of the subject. All it does is use your life as a case study to show off and talk about God. [01:44:33]
