Repentance in the Belly: Jonah's Second Chance

Jonah chapter number two gives a picture of what happens when God brings a runaway child back to himself. Jonah had run from the will of God, the word of God, the work of God, and even the worship of God, but God did not let him go. God sent the storm, and God sent the fish, and that fish was not just judgment. The fish was mercy. It was not Jonah’s prison as much as it became Jonah’s prayer closet.

Jonah cried “out of the belly of hell,” and God heard him. Praise God, he still hears. Jonah had been cast into the deep, wrapped with weeds, brought down to the bottoms of the mountains, and hemmed in like the earth had bars around him forever. Yet right there, when his soul fainted within him, Jonah remembered the Lord. The hard place became the holy place because Jonah stopped running and turned back toward the holy temple.

God’s chastening hand shows the correcting hand of a loving Father. God does not discipline because he delights in punishment, but because he desires character. Jonah’s affliction exposed what his running had hidden. The believer may get placed in a tight spot, an unwanted place, a belly-of-the-fish situation, but that place can become a place of restoration if the heart turns back to God.

Jonah’s prayer did not immediately change his circumstances. The fish did not spit him out the moment he prayed. But prayer changed Jonah. God stayed right where Jonah left him, like a compass always pointing north. Jonah had fled God’s will, not God’s presence. God’s love, mercy, and Holy Spirit could not be outrun.

Jonah finally came to the place of commitment. “They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy,” but Jonah said, “I will pay that that I have vowed.” Money cannot save. Religion cannot save. Good works cannot save. Salvation is of the Lord. Whether salvation from sin or restoration for a believer, grace belongs to God from beginning to end.

God spoke, and creation obeyed. The fish obeyed, the sea obeyed, the storm obeyed, and only Jonah had resisted. God could have left Jonah in the fish and called somebody else, but God showed compassion and gave a second chance. Then Nineveh came back into view. Nineveh was not just far away. Nineveh was outside the doors, in the neighborhood, among the broken, the addicted, the dirty, the hard, and the lost. God’s people do not need to fear Nineveh. God said go, preach what he bids, and tell them about Jesus.
