Connecting the Dots: God's Abundant Provision in John 6

John chapter six places Jesus on the far side of the Sea of Galilee with a crowd coming after him because they had seen the signs he was doing for the sick. The text sets the scene near Passover, so the old story of God saving his people and feeding them in the wilderness is already hanging in the air. Jesus sees the crowd, asks Philip where bread can be bought, and John says Jesus already knows what he is going to do.

Philip answers like a “statistical pessimist.” Philip does the math, sees the size of the crowd, and decides that even 200 denarii would barely give each person a little. Philip hears “where” and answers “how much.” Scarcity fills his imagination before the Provider does. Andrew finds a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish, but Andrew asks the same kind of question: “What are they among so many people?”

Jesus does not start with the lack. Jesus tells the people to sit down. Jesus takes the loaves, gives thanks, and gives the crowd as much as they wanted. The people are satisfied, and the leftovers fill twelve baskets. The abundance of God answers the pessimism of the disciples. God promises, but his people often compromise, and John shows how quickly the mind can slide back into thinking God has limits.

John also connects the dots with Exodus. The manna rained down from heaven after Israel left Egypt, and now bread multiplies in a deserted place near Passover. In Egypt there was the parting of the sea and the giving of bread. In John there is the giving of bread and, soon after, the walking on water. The one Israel was looking for has come. The Passover lamb has come as the Lamb of God, and salvation will come at the cost of his own blood.

The crowd sees the sign and wants to make Jesus king by force, but Jesus withdraws. Amazement is not the same as faith. God does not simply want to blow the mind. God wants to rule the heart. The God who provides more than enough is the God who walks closely beside his people.
