John 3:22-36After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. This was before John was put in prison.
An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’ The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less.”
The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
Observation questions
- In John 3:22-26, what specific situation created the heated discussion, and what complaint was voiced about where people were going? “All are going to him.” [12:11]
- How does John the Baptist describe his role in verses 27-30, and what image does he use to show his joy? “He must increase; I must decrease.” [19:32]
- From verses 31-34, list the reasons given for why Jesus is “above all.” How do “from above,” “testimony,” and “Spirit without measure” fit together?
- In verse 36, what two responses to the Son are contrasted, and what are the two outcomes tied to those responses? “Whoever believes… has eternal life… whoever does not obey… the wrath of God remains on him.” [38:51]
Interpretation questions
- What does “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it’s given him from heaven” mean for how calling, gifts, and influence are viewed? How does this reshape common ministry metrics? [13:26]
- If Jesus comes “from above” and is “above all,” what should happen when personal opinions or feelings clash with his words? “When Scripture disagrees with you, you’re wrong.” [25:05]
- What is the significance of “sets his seal to this, that God is true”? How does the seal image push faith from private agreement to public allegiance? [31:25]
- Why does verse 36 shift language from “believes” to “does not obey”? What does that reveal about the biblical relationship between faith and obedience? “Obedience is the natural immediate result of faith.” [41:22]
Application questions
- Where do you sense you’re “trying to sit on a throne that was never made” for you—work, money, schedule, relationships, private thoughts? What would it look like, this week, to step down and gladly place that area back under Jesus’ rule? [29:22]
- Think about where you serve (home, church, work). If success is measured by faithfulness rather than numbers or applause, what one metric or habit needs to change this month? [15:25]
- Name one clear command of Jesus you’ve been delaying or redefining. What belief beneath the surface needs to be addressed, and what is one first step of obedience you will take in the next 48 hours? “Disobedience is a belief problem before it’s ever a behavior problem.” [35:42]
- “Sets his seal… that God is true.” Where is one place you need to stake your reputation on God’s truth this week—at home, online, or with a friend? What words or action would make that allegiance visible and humble? [31:25]
- “He must increase; I must decrease.” Choose one practical way Jesus will increase in your everyday rhythms (calendar, budget, media, conversation). What will you decrease to make space? [19:32]
- There is no middle ground with the Son. Who is one person you can gently invite to trust Jesus this week? What simple next step will you take—text, meal, prayer, testimony? [39:08]
- When you feel empty, where do you usually run first—substances, success, distraction, control? What would it look like to turn to Jesus instead—specific prayer, a Scripture to cling to, a call for help—believing he is enough? [37:47]
