Gone Fishin' - John 21 - Pastor Pat Edrington

John 21 lands after what feels like the perfect ending in chapter 20, but John refuses to leave Peter at his worst moment. John has shown Peter denying Jesus three times, falling apart under pressure, and failing to be the man he loudly claimed he would be. John now shows how Peter gets from that mess to preaching at Pentecost and leading the early church.

Jesus finds the disciples in Galilee doing exactly what He told them to do, waiting for Him there. Peter’s fishing is not Peter quitting or giving up. Peter and the others are bored men waiting on God, so they go back to what they know. The empty nets show that ability, effort, and long nights do not produce what only Jesus can bless.

Jesus tells them to cast the net on the other side, just like He did at the beginning of their ministry in Luke 5. The full net becomes a reminder: Jesus started this thing, Jesus has come back, and Jesus still knows how to provide. God blesses what His people put their hands to when they follow what He says, even when His direction does not make much sense in the moment.

Peter jumps out of the boat because failure has not killed Peter’s desire to be near Christ. Peter knows that the uncomfortable place, the place where the confrontation is coming, is still the place where the fix is. Christ does not call broken people to run from Him and hide in shame. Christ calls broken people to come close, be restored, and become something new.

Jesus never drags Peter’s past out to embarrass him. Jesus asks Peter three times, “Do you love me?” and then gives Peter the work of feeding His sheep. The contrast between agape and philo shows Peter’s humility. Peter cannot loudly claim the kind of sacrificial, conviction-driven love that he failed to show before, but Jesus still receives Peter’s honest love and gives him a calling.

Jesus tells Peter that his future will prove what his mouth cannot yet fully say. Peter will one day die for Christ rather than deny Him, showing that restoration is not fake talk or emotional hype. Peter’s story becomes the heart of the gospel because Jesus takes the man who fell short and makes him a leader.

John ends by showing that Peter’s calling is not John’s calling. Jesus tells Peter, “What is that to you? You follow me.” Trauma, sin, comparison, and old identities cannot remain the thing that defines a forgiven person. Christ calls His people to quit living with one foot in the world and one foot at the cross, to bury the old life, and to run after the new thing He has made them to be.
