John 17: Offensive Prayer

John 17 lets the church hear Jesus praying on offense. Jesus does not only pray, “protect them” or “keep them safe.” Jesus prays, “your kingdom come” kind of prayers, the kind that send people into the muck and mire where lost things are stuck. The bike in the flooded creek becomes the picture of mission: somebody is lost, somebody ought to go get it, and the honest question rises up, “Are there snakes in here?”

Jesus prays first for the disciples, then turns the prayer outward to “those who will believe in me through their word.” That means Jesus was praying for the next generation, and every believer stands inside that prayer. The chain of witness can look random: a guy reading Dale Carnegie, an old conversation about a church, a girl at a bar who knows the address, a gospel invitation, baptism the next day. But Jesus is not random. Jesus prays, and the Father uses ordinary people and odd moments to pull somebody from black and white into vivid color.

Jesus prays that his people “may all be one,” just as the Father and Son are one. That unity is not built on compatibility, matching personalities, shared politics, or the same background. The church is not organized around comfort. The mission has a church. Jesus gathers people who may never naturally hang out together, locks arms to push back darkness, and makes the world ask what kind of miracle could make those people one.

John 17:23 presses even deeper. Jesus asks the Father to love his people even as the Father loves the Son. That word “even” lands heavy. The Father’s delight over Jesus at the Jordan, “This is my Son, the one I love, in him I am well pleased,” becomes the kind of love given to the child of God. The Father says what every heart needs to hear: “I love you. I’m proud of you. You’re mine.”

The prodigal son shows what that love looks like with skin on it. The father runs, hugs, kisses, clothes, restores, and throws a party for the wreck who came home smelling like pigs. The older brother’s white knuckles show the danger of duty without received love. The Father’s love frees believers from that tight, angry life and sends them back into the swamp with joy, because being with the Father turns rescue into adventure.
