John chapter 12 gives the last public proclamation of the Lord Jesus Christ to Israel before the cross. The world keeps producing an imaginary Jesus, a nice human teacher Jesus, an angry finger pointing Jesus, a TV Jesus promising money and health, a Hollywood Jesus with no pain, and a magic eight ball Jesus with quick answers. But John shows that Christ will not be left undefined. Christ reveals who he truly is, and that revelation is the only Christ who saves.
John first exposes the spiritual condition of Israel. Christ had performed many signs before them, yet they were not believing in him. Isaiah had already said, “Lord, who has believed our report?” and John shows that unbelief had become hardness. The rulers were no better, because many affirmed facts about Jesus, but would not confess him for fear of the Pharisees. The approval of men had become stronger to them than the approval of God.
Christ still cries out. The Lord does not become indifferent to the lost, even when the lost reject him. Christ’s passion shows a habitual pursuit, the same kind of passion later seen in Paul going back into the city that stoned him, and in the apostles who kept right on preaching Jesus as the Christ after being beaten. Christ keeps proclaiming truth because sinners need to know who he is.
Christ first reveals that he is God. When Jesus says, “He who believes in me does not believe in me, but in him who sent me,” he destroys the idea that a person can have the Father while rejecting the Son. Christ and the Father are one in essence, will, and work. To see Christ is to see the one who sent him, because he is the image of the invisible God, the radiance of his glory, and the exact representation of his nature.
Christ then reveals that he came as light into the world. Darkness is not cute, not harmless, not freedom, and not fun. Darkness destroys, enslaves, lies, cuts, kills, and leaves people sitting in the shadow of death. Christ promises that whoever believes in him will not remain in darkness.
Christ also reveals that all are accountable to him. The world says every person can pick up a shattered piece of glass and call it truth, but Christ says the one who rejects him already has one who judges him. His words will judge on the last day. Christ’s words carry that authority because they are not from his own initiative, but from the Father who sent him.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Christ pursues hardened rejecters Christ does not become cold toward those who reject him. Israel had seen the signs, heard the truth, and still remained in unbelief, yet Christ cried out again. The compassion of Jesus is not sentimental softness, but holy persistence toward people who are blind, hardened, and still in need of mercy. [10:46]
- 2. Undefined Jesus cannot save The real Christ cannot be reduced to a vague religious feeling or a half truth. The Jesus who saves is God the Son, sinless, crucified, risen, and one with the Father. Easy believism leaves Christ undefined, and an undefined Christ gives sinners room to admire him without bowing to him. [16:23]
- 3. Darkness promises life, then destroys Darkness presents itself as beauty, freedom, pleasure, and missing out on nothing. Christ exposes it as slavery, sorrow, death, and bondage under Satan’s will. The mercy of the light is that Christ does not merely improve darkness, but delivers believers so they will not remain in it. [38:24]
- 4. Christ’s words judge every soul Rejection of Christ is not neutral, private, or consequence free. The one who sets aside Jesus as worthless will meet the words of Jesus again in the courtroom of God. The gospel that is now offered as mercy will stand as the charge against those who would not receive it. [48:42]
- 5. The Father speaks through Christ Christ’s words carry final authority because the Father gave him what to say and what to speak. Israel claimed Moses while rejecting the greater Prophet who spoke the very words of God. To reject Christ’s voice is not merely to reject a messenger, but to reject the Father who sent him.
