Light and Dark | John 1:5 | Believe and Live

John opens with the eternal Word, the One who was with God and was God, shining into darkness that cannot master Him. Genesis supplies the first layer of that claim: God speaks into the formless dark, light comes into being, and darkness has no power to compete with it. God does not strike a balance between light and darkness. He brings light from Himself, puts darkness in its place, and draws its boundaries.

John then brings that creation language into the incarnation. The true Light enters a world that He made, yet moral darkness has covered the hearts of men. Sin is not merely an absence of light. It is the wickedness that loves hiding, hates exposure, and recoils when Christ’s righteousness shines upon it. Christ comes as eternal Life into a world destined for death, bringing forgiveness and life to those trapped in darkness.

Christ’s crucifixion looked like darkness had won. Men cursed Him, mocked Him, beat Him, and killed Him. But Christ rose from the grave, proving that the darkness has not overcome the Light. John’s present tense matters: “The light shines.” Christ’s resurrection has begun a new creation, as His voice still calls dead men and women out of moral darkness and gives them eternal life.

The death of Emily brings the ache of that promise into sharp focus. Death feels like perishing. A young life cut short feels like darkness overcoming light. Yet Christ’s promise reaches beyond what grieving eyes can see. The disciples lived through Saturday without seeing Sunday coming, and believers now live in that same kind of waiting. Christ will speak again, and all who are in the tombs will hear His voice and rise.

Revelation shows where Christ’s new creation is going: God dwelling with His people, tears wiped away, death gone, and no night remaining because the Lamb is its lamp. Emily’s testimony showed that Christ had called her out of darkness. She ran to the Light, trusted God, and found that the Lord had become her lamp. Her death is a tragedy for those left behind, but not for her. She closed her eyes in death and opened them before the Savior who is Life itself. Friday is real, grief is right, and tears are fitting, but Sunday is coming.
