The Story of Joe Jacobson

Genesis 41 puts the greatness of God on display by taking Joseph from the pit to the palace, but the real point is bigger than Joseph’s promotion. God rules over every authority, even over Pharaoh, the man Egypt saw as almost divine and the ruler of the strongest nation in the world. Pharaoh’s dreams trouble him because all the power, magic, and wisdom of Egypt cannot tell him what God is doing. The throne of Egypt looks huge, but the dreams show that God calls the shots, not Pharaoh.

The cupbearer finally remembers Joseph after two whole years, but God had never forgotten him. Joseph comes before Pharaoh cleaned up on the outside, but more importantly, ready on the inside. Pharaoh tries to put the gift on Joseph, saying he has heard Joseph can interpret dreams. Joseph’s answer refuses every bit of self-glory: “It is not in me.” God gives the answer, God reveals what is coming, God shows Pharaoh, and God will bring it about shortly.

Joseph’s faithfulness matters because it has been formed in the boring places. Potiphar’s house, the prison, and the long forgotten years have all been places where Joseph keeps doing the small right things. Consistency plus faithfulness multiplied by time gives lasting impact, but faithfulness is not a magic formula for blessing. Joseph’s life shows that faithfulness can lead to prison, delay, and being overlooked, but God’s presence remains the promise through all of it.

Joseph’s promotion is amazing, but Genesis 41 does not make it about getting a better life. God places Joseph in power so Egypt and the surrounding nations can have bread when famine comes. The blessing given to Joseph is not mainly for Joseph’s benefit. God works through his servant to save others.

The bread in Egypt points beyond Joseph to Jesus, the bread of life. Joseph stores grain so people can live through famine, but Christ gives himself to satisfy the soul in a way nothing else can. Everything else may satisfy for a moment, but Jesus remains the rock underneath the ups and downs of life. Romans 10 makes the call plain: confess Jesus as Lord, believe God raised him from the dead, and call on the name of the Lord. God is not merely high in the sky and angry. God is mighty, and God is in love with sinners through Christ.
