Genesis 40 picks up with Joseph in prison, and Joseph’s life still looks like a roller coaster of ups and downs. The prison is not a clean or easy place, even for the one put in charge. The text shows Joseph serving right there, in the dark, dingy, nasty place where God has allowed him to be. God’s presence with Joseph, repeated at the end of Genesis 39, drives that kind of service. Joseph does not moan, blame Potiphar’s wife, or sit around bitter. Joseph’s life says, “serve where you are,” because service to people is really service to the Lord.

Genesis 40 also presses the church to see that promotion begins with faithfulness. Joseph is trusted with the prison because Joseph is faithful in the little things. The point is not that everybody has to clean toilets, but that leadership is service before it is platform. God does not hand bigger opportunities to people who refuse to serve in smaller ones. The small room, the family, the job, the meeting nobody wants to sit in, all of it becomes a place to ask, “Who can be served here?”

The dreams of the cupbearer and baker bring another issue to the surface. The unknown has to be trusted to God. Joseph says, “Do not interpretations belong to God?” and that line shows real confidence. Joseph is not making things up, and Joseph is not pretending to control the future. God alone knows what the dreams mean, and God alone knows what is coming next. The anxious thing, the future thing, the broken relationship, the sin that has stayed too long, all of it belongs in God’s hands.

The cupbearer’s restoration looks like Joseph’s best chance to get out. The text lets that hope rise for three days, and then lets it fall hard with one simple line: “yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.” People disappoint. Friends forget. People in power fail to help. But the story keeps pointing beyond Joseph to Jesus. Joseph was innocent and condemned, suffered because of someone else’s sin, and sat between two prisoners where one lived and one died. Jesus was innocent and condemned, crucified between two criminals, and promised life to the thief who said, “Remember me.” Joseph was forgotten by the cupbearer, but Jesus did not forget the thief, and Jesus will not forget his people.
