Job 1 puts suffering inside the bigger truth of God’s good and gracious providence. God is not the author of sin, evil, or pain, and he does not delight in loss, yet no suffering enters the lives of his people outside his control. The cross proves that God can ordain what wicked people mean for evil without sharing in their evil, and can mean it for good.

Job’s life starts with blessing on every side. Job is blameless and upright, fears God, turns from evil, and faithfully prays for his children. Job is also prosperous beyond measure, prominent and wealthy in the East. Satan’s accusation cuts right to the heart: Job only loves God because God has bought his loyalty with gifts. Satan claims that if the gifts disappear, Job will curse God.

God’s authority stands over that accusation. Satan is real, evil, and active, but he can only do what God allows. The devil is not God’s equal. He is on a leash. Job never sees the conversation in heaven, but the reader sees that even this terrible trial is not random, out of control, or outside the hand of God.

Job’s losses come one after another, while each messenger is still speaking. His livestock, servants, wealth, and finally all ten children are gone. Job’s response shows what faithful stewardship of suffering looks like: he grieves and he worships. He tears his robe, shaves his head, falls to the ground, and blesses the name of the Lord. His worship is not mainly a feeling. It is a statement of faith: “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Suffering always involves loss, so grief must be named rather than denied. God uses hardship like a knife, medicine, and fire. The knife cuts away what should not be there, medicine heals what is sick, and fire refines what would otherwise remain weak. God may bring his children to the end of themselves so that they rely not on themselves but on the God who raises the dead.

Job never receives the explanation for his suffering, but God gives him something better: himself. Faith trusts God’s heart when his hand cannot be traced. Christ gives believers the one treasure that suffering cannot take away. Children, health, wealth, and plans may be lost, but the redeemed can always say, “My Redeemer.”
