#ComeAsYouAre
“Here's what I want you to hear. You don't have to figure it out to come to Jesus. Said it last week. He's not asking you to get cleaned up first. He just said, come. And Mary and Martha just came. They both walked up to Jesus with a complaint, and Jesus listened, and he cared. He was deeply moved, knowing full well. The end of the story. That doesn't answer your pain with an explanation from a distance. He came down to it. He died in it and walked out of his own tomb. All so that your pain would not have the final word either. And that's the invitation. Not to get it together, not clean up your life, but come. That's the invitation. Come to Jesus. All ye who are heavy laden, come.”

#PainNotFinalWord
“Now Jesus paid a big price for doing this. resurrecting, re resuscitating Lazarus is the exact instance, the exact event that led to the arrest warrant to the to that led to the death sentence. This is it. It is the story that ultimately set in motion that plan to arrest him, and Jesus met him there anyway. If you walk away with nothing else but this, I hope you do. I hope you all see that God never wanted your pain, that he weeps over your loss, but he refuses to let it have the last word.”

#HelpUnwrapGrief
“Please hear me. Your prayers didn't fail. Your faith was not too small. Martha's faith was a mess, and she still saw God's glory. Some of you are here, and you're not even carrying much pain at all. You identify more with the crowd more than anybody else in this story. Don't miss that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead and then handed the task of removing the clothes to the crowd. It's not our job to raise the dead. That's Jesus' role. But someone near you still has grave clothes on your arms and they need a helping hand. Maybe, you somebody keeps tripping over those grave clothes.”

#GodIsNotNeutral
“When Jesus arrives, he explains nothing. Not to Mary and Martha, not to the crowd. He offers no explanation for why God allows evil. And I think what it does is it tells us that god or what god is like in the presence of evil. And there are three things, and these aren't points you may wanna write them down. I probably should have included these three in your notes. But there are three things that god is not. He's not neutral. He's not distant, and he's not finished. There are three things that God are not. He's not neutral, he's not distant, and he's not finished. Now that is not an explanation. Those are really just three facts about god's posture toward your worst thing. And every one of those three things is far from indifferent. He's not neutral, he's not distant, and he's not finished.”

#JesusGivesHimselfNotTheology
“Again, kind of a a reflexive answer, a a preloaded answer. Ready to just, I know he's gonna rise. So will we all, Lord. You're right. And there's nothing technically wrong with what she said. It's just not very emotionally honest. Like, she has correct theology, but it's not doing anything for her. Like, it's head knowledge. It's not really embedded in her heart. And I want you to notice that Jesus does not give her better theology. What he gives is himself.”

#StopPlatitudesAtGrief
“When we are at funerals and people are wrestling with why death happened or that sickness happened, you will often hear someone say, well, everything happens for a reason. Ever heard that one? Ever said that one? Or maybe god just needed another angel or maybe god won't give you more than you can handle. All well meaning statements. Meanwhile, our heart are slowly growing in compassion. It's slowly growing harder and harder and harder every time we say those things, every time we hear those things. They're meant to comfort, but they actually compact.”

#AcknowledgeTheLoss
“Here's what I think he's saying to us this week. Say it out loud, quietly, write it down. You don't have to fix it. You don't have to explain it. Just acknowledge it. Like, that was a real loss in my life. Whatever that loss was. That was a real that was a real, like, that was a real wound. You don't even have to know what it means. I just want you to quit calling it small.”

#GodNotOffendedByGrief
“When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and feet and said, Lord, if only you've been here, my brother would not have died. I want you to notice Martha and Mary had the same initial thing that they said. Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, he would not have died. Both of them are grieving that Jesus was not there to save Lazarus. Martha processed out loud. Mary processed internally. No follow-up questions or statements. Marriages fell into tears. Two grieving sisters, two different processing, one external, one internal. They both got the same welcome. I want to say to you very clearly, god is not offended by your grief or your questions. Like he's bigger than all of those things. Both sisters saw Jesus and said if only you had been here. Neither one of them were rebuked by Jesus.”
