John’s vision in Revelation 5 turns on one little scroll in the right hand of the Creator. The scroll is written on both sides and sealed seven times over, locked up tight with God’s own decree. Ezekiel’s open scroll carried lamentation, mourning, and woe, but John’s sealed scroll waits for somebody not merely to announce God’s judgment, but to execute it. The scroll holds the return of Christ, the vindication of suffering saints, the new heavens and new earth, and every promise God has made to His people.
The mighty angel asks, “Who is worthy?” The word means somebody weighty enough to approach the Creator and take what rests in His hand. Heaven, earth, and under the earth cannot produce one worthy person. John weeps because, if the scroll stays shut, Christian hope stays shut with it. The resurrection of the dead, the end of suffering, the defeat of evil, and the sight of loved ones in Christ all stand waiting for the scroll to be opened.
The elder tells John not to weep because the Lion from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered. Judah’s Lion carries the promise of a King before whom all peoples bow. David’s Root carries the promise that God can bring fresh life out of a cut-down stump. Yet John turns to see the Lion and beholds a slaughtered Lamb standing in the midst of the throne.
The Lamb does not correct the Lion. The Lamb shows how the Lion conquered. Christ did not take the world by force, spectacle, or making His enemies bleed. Christ took sin, judgment, and death upon Himself. The Lamb is slaughtered, yet standing. His wounds remain, but the killing is over. His seven horns declare full power, His seven eyes declare that nothing is hidden from King Jesus, and His Spirit goes into all the earth.
The Lamb takes the scroll without objection because He is equal in worth with the One seated on the throne. Heaven falls down before Him and sings a new song: “You are worthy.” Christ is worthy because His blood purchased people for God from every tribe, language, people, and nation. His blood does not purchase spectators. His blood purchases a kingdom of priests, secure in standing before God and now called into His service.
The bowls of incense show that the prayers of the saints have not evaporated. Every prayer confessing human need and God’s sufficiency rises before the throne as worship. All creation finally joins the song, giving blessing, honor, glory, and power to the Father and the Lamb forever. The Lamb alone is worthy, so guilty people do not make themselves worthy. They stand behind the Lamb, trust His blood, and give Him their whole lives.
Key Takeaways
- 1. The scroll holds every Christian hope
The sealed scroll contains far more than a frightening picture of judgment. The return of Christ, the rescue of suffering saints, the resurrection, and the new creation all belong to God’s decree. The future is not loose, random, or hanging on human ability. The future rests in the hand of God and under the authority of the Lamb. [28:20]
- 2. The Lion conquered as the Lamb
Christ conquers in a way that undoes every worldly definition of power. The Lion of Judah wins by becoming the slaughtered Lamb, bearing judgment rather than merely inflicting it. His cross is not weakness before His kingdom comes. His cross is the very reason He is worthy to reign. [38:35]
- 3. Christ secures a people, then sends them
Christ’s people do not serve God in order to become secure. His blood has already purchased them, and He has made them a kingdom of priests. Service grows out of finished redemption, not anxious efforts to earn a place before God. The Lamb did not buy a congregation of spectators. [50:21]
- 4. Prayer remains before God’s throne
The bowls of incense show that no prayer of faith simply disappears into silence. God receives prayers that confess need and trust His sufficiency as worship. Long waiting does not mean God has failed to hear. The prayers of the saints remain before Him, precious and present. [52:39]
- 5. The unworthy stand behind the Lamb
Heaven’s search comes back empty on every human being. Christ alone can approach God on the basis of His own worth, and Christ alone carries guilty people into God’s presence. Faith does not mean making oneself worthy. Faith means turning from sin and standing behind the Lamb who was slain and is still standing. [59:25]
