Jesus Became Flesh, Sin-Bearer, Savior, and Cornerstone

John declares that “the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us,” and that plain word settles the matter about who Jesus is. Man may call him a prophet, or nothing special, or some old religious figure from back in the day, but Scripture tells the truth. Jesus is not just a past tense fact. Jesus is a present tense reality, living and abiding in the hearts of those who know him.

The name of Jesus therefore ought not be hidden away. The goodness of God ought to be spoken instead of gossip, harsh words, and all that yapping that tears people down. Christ knows the hurt, the marriage, the children, the job, the mess at home, and the wounded places of the heart. The Lord loves souls, intercedes, blesses, and is worthy to take over a life that has too long run on its own opinions.

John’s word first shows that Jesus became flesh. The divine nature took human nature into partnership, and the Son of God felt hurt, endured torment, and faced temptation “in all points like as” man does, yet without sin. Christ’s flesh proves that living in this world does not require living according to the flesh. The world keeps throwing junk, carnality, and negativity into the mind, but Christ strengthens, forgives, empowers, and calls the believer to daily prayer, daily Bible, and real hunger like the Bereans.

Paul then shows that Jesus became poor. Though rich, Christ became poor so that needy souls might be made rich in him. No room in the inn, no place to lay his head, no earthly fame worth having, yet rich in grace, he gave riches for the soul that no good time, money, prestige, or relationship could ever supply.

Philippians declares that Jesus became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Christ paid a debt man could not pay and died a death man could not die. Beaten, mocked, stripped, crowned with thorns, and shamed before the world, he provided cleansing, hope, steadfastness, and life that sinners could never manufacture.

Second Corinthians says that Jesus became sin for those who were corrupt. He did not become sinful, but he shouldered the blame, carried the burden, and became the sin offering of the ages. Hebrews shows him as the author of salvation, and First Corinthians shows him as the firstfruits of them that slept. Because Christ rose, death is not the end for those who serve him.

Acts finally names Jesus the head of the corner. The rejected stone became the chief cornerstone, the starting point and foundation of the church. From him everything takes off, and nobody can steal his sovereign place.
