Bible reading:
John 20:19-29 (ESV)
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Luke 24:13-35 (ESV)
That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Observation questions
- In John 20, what two things did Jesus show his disciples to prove his identity and what was their initial reaction?
- What specific instruction and gift did Jesus give his disciples before Thomas arrived, and what authority did it grant them? [49:58]
- In the Luke 24 account, what prevented the two disciples from recognizing Jesus at first and what specific action finally caused them to realize who he was? [28:37]
- What was the primary subject Jesus discussed with the disciples on the road to Emmaus and what was their emotional response to this teaching?
Interpretation questions
- Why do you think Jesus chose to appear to his disciples behind locked doors when he could have appeared anywhere, and what does this reveal about his understanding of their emotional state? [40:35]
- Thomas demanded physical proof of the resurrection, yet Jesus pronounced a blessing on those who would believe without seeing. What does this shift from physical evidence to faith tell us about how God wants us to relate to him today?
- The disciples on the road to Emmaus didn't recognize Jesus by sight but through the breaking of bread and the opening of Scripture. What does this suggest about how Jesus often reveals himself to people versus how we might expect him to appear?
- Jesus breathed on his disciples and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit," before the day of Pentecost. What might have been the purpose of this earlier encounter with the Spirit compared to the later Pentecost experience? [50:14]
Application questions
- The disciples were gathered together in fear when Jesus appeared to them. When have you experienced Jesus meeting you in a place of fear or uncertainty, and how did that change your situation?
- Thomas moved from doubt to confession when he encountered the risen Christ. What are some honest doubts you’ve wrestled with in your faith journey and what helped you move toward confession and belief?
- Jesus was recognized through the ordinary act of breaking bread rather than a grand display. What are some simple, everyday practices (like sharing a meal or reading Scripture with others) where you could become more attentive to Jesus’ presence in your life? [28:37]
- Jesus commissioned his followers with the authority to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit. How does this spiritual responsibility affect the way you handle conflict, offer forgiveness, or confront sin in your relationships with other believers?
- The disciples on the road to Emmaus had their hearts set on fire when Jesus opened the Scriptures to them. What part of the Bible has recently stirred your heart or changed your perspective, and how did you respond to that experience?
- Jesus spent 40 days after his resurrection appearing to many people and preparing his followers. If you knew you had limited time left with someone you were discipling, what would be the most important things you would want to teach them about following Jesus? [51:54]
- The resurrection was confirmed through multiple witnesses rather than just one person's testimony. Who are the people in your life whose faith testimony has helped strengthen your own belief, and how could you become that kind of reliable witness for others? [56:53]
