Bible Reading
John 21:1-17 “Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 'I’m going out to fish,' Simon Peter told them, and they said, 'We’ll go with you.' So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, 'Friends, haven’t you any fish?' 'No,' they answered. He said, 'Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.' When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, 'It is the Lord!' As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, 'It is the Lord,' he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, 'Bring some of the fish you have just caught.' So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, 'Come and have breakfast.' None of the disciples dared ask him, 'Who are you?' They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?' 'Yes, Lord,' he said, 'you know that I love you.' Jesus said, 'Feed my lambs.' Again Jesus said, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' He answered, 'Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.' Jesus said, 'Take care of my sheep.' The third time he said to him, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, 'Do you love me?' He said, 'Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.' Jesus said, 'Feed my sheep.”

[01:34:55]Observation questions
- In John 21:1–17, what happens during the disciples’ night of fishing, and what changes after they follow Jesus’ instruction from the shore? [01:23:09]
- What details show that Peter quickly moves toward Jesus once he realizes who is standing on the shore?
- What does Jesus provide for the disciples before He speaks again to Peter about his future? [01:27:56]
- How many times does Jesus ask Peter about his love, and what responsibility does Jesus give after each answer? [01:32:10]
Interpretation questions
- Peter’s decision to go fishing came after his denial of Jesus. Why might returning to a familiar former life feel safer than continuing in God’s calling after a person has failed? [01:16:29]
- What might the empty net communicate to Peter and the other experienced fishermen about trying to live apart from Jesus’ direction? [01:24:41]
- Why is it significant that Jesus invites Peter to eat before He addresses Peter’s denial and gives him responsibility again? [01:29:27]
- Jesus connects Peter’s repeated confession of love with caring for His people. What does this reveal about the relationship between loving Jesus and serving others in His church? [01:33:16]
Application questions
- Is there a “what if” from the past that still brings shame, regret, or the feeling of being disqualified? How can Peter’s restoration shape the way that failure is viewed today? [01:17:57]
- When disappointment or failure comes, what old place, habit, relationship, or way of living feels most tempting to return to because it seems familiar or safe? [01:18:08]
- Has there been an “empty net” season—a pursuit, habit, or direction that left a person feeling empty rather than fulfilled? What might God be inviting that person to see or reconsider? [01:24:43]
- Jesus met Peter at the shore where he had drifted. Where does a person in this group most need to believe that Jesus meets them with grace rather than waits for them to fix themselves first? [01:21:18]
- Jesus did not restore Peter only to remove guilt; He restored him for an assignment. What gifts, experiences, or areas of care might God use to help someone serve His “lambs” and “sheep” this week? [01:33:25]
- Jesus’ call to Peter was still “Follow me.” What is one clear, faithful next step of following Jesus that may have been delayed because of fear, shame, distraction, or discouragement? [01:35:32]
