Bible reading: John 20:19-31 (ESV)
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” 24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Observation questions
- What was the emotional state of the disciples when Jesus first appeared to them, and what was His first word to them?
- What specific proof did Jesus show the disciples to confirm His identity and what happened to Him? [52:02]
- What was Thomas’s specific condition for believing that Jesus was alive, and how did Jesus respond to him eight days later?
- According to the final verses, what is the stated purpose for the events written in the book of John?
Interpretation questions
- Jesus offers peace not as the absence of trouble but as His presence within trouble [48:46]. How does this understanding of peace change the way a person might face a difficult circumstance?
- The scars of Jesus are described as the "receipt of the rescue" [52:44]. What does this metaphor tell us about the nature of our salvation and the cost that was paid for it?
- Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on the disciples and immediately sends them out. Why is the presence of the Holy Spirit so crucial for the mission Jesus gives them?
- Jesus pronounces a blessing on those who believe without seeing. What does this suggest about the nature of faith and how it is formed in a person?
Application questions
- Peace is the presence of Jesus in our trouble, not the absence of it [48:46]. What is one current trouble or fear in your life where you need to consciously recognize and rely on Christ’s presence this week?
- Scars are the receipt of the rescue [52:44]. When you are tempted to fear or doubt, how can you actively remind yourself of the proof of Christ’s finished work to reshape your perspective from fear to hope?
- Blessing isn't about getting more stuff; it's about being sent with purpose and direction [57:42]. In what practical way can you shift your focus this week from what you want to accumulate to how you are being sent to participate in God’s work?
- Doubt is not a dead end; it is a door [01:02:58]. What is a specific question or doubt you have been wrestling with, and what would it look like to honestly bring it to Jesus instead of letting it push you away?
- The book of John was written so that people may believe and have life [01:07:14]. Is there someone in your life who is curious or skeptical about Jesus? How could you gently invite them to read the book of John with you over the next 21 days?
