Following Jesus On The Narrow Road | Sermon On The Mount | Pastor Adam Bishop

Jesus commands his hearers to enter through the narrow gate, and that command pushes against the idea that following him can simply blend in with whatever everybody else is doing. The narrow road leads to life, while the broad road leads to destruction, so desire alone cannot determine where a life ends up. Direction, not desire, determines destination. Repentance means recognizing that a road is taking somebody somewhere wrong and changing direction before the scenery becomes more important than the destination.

The narrow road also means the crowd probably will not follow. The pressure to be an influencer can distract a person from the individual God has already put right in front of them. Jesus did not chase crowds, even though crowds followed him. Jesus changed the world by giving himself to twelve ordinary people, and faithful discipleship still pays attention to the person at work, at home, at school, or across the table.

Following Jesus requires surrendering the right to define life on personal terms. Salvation is freely received, but Jesus gets to call the shots in the life he purchased. His way confronts personal preference in forgiveness, purity, prayer for enemies, marriage, parenting, work, and every other place where a heart says, “I know what you want me to do, but I don’t want to do it.”

The Holy Spirit meets that gap between knowing Jesus’ way and wanting another way. Spiritual maturity is not merely forcing obedience through more willpower. Spiritual maturity is increasingly wanting what Jesus wants. Yielding to the Spirit includes honestly giving God permission to change desires, thoughts, and feelings over time. The Helper does what human effort cannot do alone.

Jesus also warns that wolves come dressed like sheep. Spiritual influence requires care, because bad fruit eventually reveals a bad tree. Shepherds must earn trust rather than demand blind loyalty, and churches should establish real accountability rather than hide authority in the shadows. Fruit must be inspected by trusted people who have enough access to point out blind spots without losing access to the life they are trying to help.

Jesus finally leaves no room for half-hearted Christianity. One foot in the world and one foot in the kingdom wastes a life. The narrow road calls imperfect people to be all in, handing Jesus the sheet of paper and letting him make the list.
