Jesus is the mystery concealed, manifested, revealed, experienced, and proclaimed. The great questions of humanity cannot be settled by intelligence, philosophy, or religious tradition. God himself must reveal who he is and how sinful humanity can be reconciled to him. The mystery was never that God had no plan. God had a plan that earlier generations could not fully comprehend.
The Old Testament gives glimpses of that redemptive purpose: the woman’s seed, the promised sacrifice, the virgin’s son, and the child called mighty God and everlasting Father. These were pieces of a larger story. In the fullness of time, what had been concealed became manifested. The Creator entered his creation. The bread of life experienced hunger, and the resurrection and the life submitted himself to death. Jesus was not partly God and partly man. He was fully God and fully man, with all the fullness of the Godhead dwelling in him bodily.
The gospel also reveals God’s purpose to bring Jews and Gentiles into one body. Those once far away become fellow heirs, fellow members, and fellow partakers of the promise. The church is not an association of disconnected individuals. Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection open the door, and the apostolic response is repentance, baptism in Jesus’ name for the remission of sins, and receiving the Holy Ghost.
Christ then moves from revelation to relationship: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” God above humanity, God with humanity, and God dwelling within believers are the work of one God. This relationship cannot amount to holding down a pew on Sunday. Daily love and obedience make room for transforming power.
Revelation brings responsibility. Ordinary, imperfect vessels carry an extraordinary treasure, and that treasure is Christ, not themselves. The church must proclaim Jesus beyond its walls, trusting the power working within believers to accomplish more than human thought can measure.
Key Takeaways
- 1. God Reveals What Intelligence Cannot Solve. The mystery remained hidden because humanity could not fully comprehend God’s plan, not because God lacked one. The promises scattered through Scripture were glimpses of a purpose that came into view in Jesus Christ. Knowing God therefore rests on his willingness to make himself known, rather than on exceptional intelligence or theological status. [52:21]
- 2. Christ Brings Outsiders Into One Body. The gospel gives those once far away more than permission to stand near the promises. In Christ, they become fellow heirs, fellow members, and fellow partakers. Belonging to that body challenges the habit of treating church as an association of disconnected individuals whose presence makes no difference. [1:05:43]
- 3. Love Makes Daily Obedience Personal. Experiencing Christ means more than acknowledging truth or attending on Sunday. Love for Jesus changes what believers desire to do more of and what they desire to leave behind. Obedience to what is already known opens the way for the next step, making transformation a daily relationship rather than a weekly appearance. [1:18:27]
- 4. Revelation Carries Responsibility Beyond Church Walls. Revelation was never intended to terminate with the person receiving it. Paul’s progression from revelation to grace, stewardship, and proclamation shows that knowing Christ carries a responsibility to make him known. The church fulfills that responsibility by proclaiming Jesus rather than its personalities, organization, or religious system. [1:20:24]
- 5. Ordinary Vessels Carry An Extraordinary Treasure. God places his Spirit within ordinary, imperfect people so that the excellence of the power belongs to him. The vessel is not the treasure, and personal weakness does not make Christ less precious or powerful. This keeps proclamation centered on Jesus while giving imperfect believers reason to serve without pretending to be impressive. [1:22:06]
