Today, we gathered as a church family across all our campuses, celebrating God’s faithfulness and the growth He is bringing to our community. As we continue our series on the foundational truths of Christianity, we focused on the identity of Jesus, specifically through the lens of Isaiah’s prophecy that names Him “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Today, we explored what it means that Jesus is the “Mighty God.”
The question of who Jesus is remains the most important question any of us will ever answer. Our response to Him determines not only the direction of our lives but our eternal destiny. Scripture is clear and unambiguous: Jesus is not merely a good man or a wise teacher, but God Himself in human flesh. The evidence for Jesus’ existence is overwhelming, not only from the Bible but also from respected non-Christian historians. The apostles and hundreds of others were eyewitnesses to His life, death, and resurrection.
We examined three core reasons for believing in the deity of Christ. First, the Bible explicitly teaches that Jesus is God, as seen in passages like John 1 and Hebrews 1, where both the Father and the Son are called God. Second, Jesus did things only God could do—He forgave sins, performed miracles, calmed storms, and raised the dead. Third, the resurrection stands as the ultimate validation of His divinity. If Jesus did not rise from the dead, our faith is empty. But the historical evidence for the resurrection is compelling, and countless lives have been transformed by encountering the risen Christ.
It is not enough to admire Jesus or to call Him a great moral teacher. He claimed to be God, and that claim demands a response. As C.S. Lewis famously argued, Jesus leaves us no room to call Him merely a good man—He is either a liar, a lunatic, or the Lord. The cross only has power to save because Jesus is God; only God could pay the infinite price for our sins. Each of us must decide: will we reject Him, ignore Him, or trust Him as Savior and Lord? For those who choose to trust Him, there is forgiveness, new life, and the assurance that He is with us, empowering us to live for Him.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus is fully God and fully human The incarnation is not a compromise or a dilution of divinity, but the mystery of God taking on flesh to dwell among us. Jesus experienced real human pain, temptation, and suffering, yet remained fully God. This means He understands our struggles intimately, and His sacrifice on the cross is sufficient for all our needs. [09:27]
- 2. The resurrection validates Jesus’ divine claims Without the resurrection, Christianity would be empty and powerless. The fact that Jesus rose from the dead is the cornerstone of our faith and the ultimate proof that His claims are true. The resurrection assures us that death is not the end, and that Jesus has authority over life, death, and eternity. [28:40]
- 3. Only God can pay the infinite price for sin Sin is not just a mistake or a minor flaw; it is an infinite offense against a holy God. No finite being could ever pay the debt we owe. Only Jesus, as God in the flesh, could bear the full weight of our sin and offer true forgiveness. This is why trusting in Him alone brings salvation and peace with God. [36:21]
- 4. Each person must decide who Jesus is Jesus’ claims about Himself are too radical to ignore or dismiss as mere moral teaching. He forces us to a decision: either He is who He says He is, or He is not. Our response to Jesus is the most significant choice we will ever make, shaping not only our present but our eternity.
