When Jesus Moves In, Idols Must Move Out

Acts 19 puts Ephesus in view as a place soaked in money, magic, idol worship, and spiritual darkness. The Ephesian Christians had lived in that water so long that they could not fully see how dark it was until Jesus brought them into the kingdom of light. The kingdom of God confronts competing powers, and God does extraordinary miracles through Paul, not through Paul’s sweat rags or anybody’s religious tricks.

The seven sons of Sceva show what borrowed faith looks like. Their use of Jesus’ name becomes a religious hustle, an attempt to get spiritual power, status, and probably money without actually knowing the risen Savior. The evil spirit knows Jesus and recognizes Paul, but it has no reason to fear people who only know how to say the right words. Jesus plus religious vocabulary is not Christianity. Jesus plus church attendance, Jesus plus a family reputation, Jesus plus a bank account, or Jesus plus a secret backup plan still leaves the heart divided.

The kingdom of God changes what people trust. The believers in Ephesus come confessing and divulging the practices they had kept hidden. Their magic books had been their security, their power, and their source of control, but meeting Jesus exposes those things as counterfeits. Anything needed in addition to or in place of God for security and happiness becomes an idol, even when that thing looks good. Perfect parenting, a church title, money, comfort, a reputation, sex, or success can all become things held tighter than Christ.

The bonfire in Ephesus shows the cost of going all in. The books amount to fifty thousand pieces of silver, a multimillion dollar fire in today’s terms. The believers do not sell their old darkness to somebody else. The kingdom becomes worth more than their money, their safety, and their public image. The word of the Lord increases and prevails mightily because people burn idols rather than hiding them in the back room.

Secret sin keeps people on the shelf, pretending at Christianity while never tasting freedom. Pornography, lust, shopping, alcohol, money, and every other counterfeit grow in the dark, but confession brings them into the light. The Son disinfects what secrecy has allowed to fester. Jesus does not need superficial religion or lucky charm prayers in his name. Jesus calls people to make a wreck of their little kingdoms so there is room for his kingdom to move in.
