The image of the temple helps set the weight of the moment, moving past the courts and the altar and the curtain into the very presence of God on earth. The shadow of the cross falls over every word, because Thursday night is almost gone and Friday morning, with arrest, trial, condemnation, and crucifixion, is only hours away.

Jesus lifts up his eyes and asks, “Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you.” Glory means the presence and weightiness of God put on public display. The Son asks the Father to display that glory through death, resurrection, and ascension, and the cross becomes the strangest and darkest place where the glory of God is seen.
