Common sayings can sound true, helpful, and wise, but those little old wives’ tales do not always hold up when they are examined. The warning starts there because the same thing can happen with the Bible. Feel good sayings can get attached to Jesus even when Jesus never said them, and those sayings can become Band Aids over bullet holes. The Band Aid may cover the wound for a minute, but the wound underneath still needs the great physician.
Jesus never said, “follow your heart.” Jeremiah calls the heart deceitful and hard to understand, and Jesus says evil thoughts and sin come out of the heart. The heart can trick a person into calling the wrong thing right, so the heart cannot be the measuring stick. Jesus says, “follow me,” and that means giving up one’s own way, taking up the cross, and walking in obedience, love, and sacrifice.
Jesus never said, “be true to yourself.” That saying sounds freeing, but it can become me-centeredness with a Bible sticker on it. Jesus calls people to give up the rights, privileges, and freedoms that get in the way of his kingdom. God’s plans are better than divided desires, because no one can serve two masters.
Jesus never said, “live your own truth.” Truth is not subjective, and everybody having a private truth ends in chaos. Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” and God’s Word is truth. Culture may tell a person to become whatever feels right, but God says every person is fearfully and wonderfully made, with value because of who God created them to be.
Jesus never said, “believe in yourself.” Jesus says, “believe in me.” Human righteousness is like filthy rags, and self-confidence cannot make anyone new. Faith in Christ brings peace, trust, and healing that self-effort cannot produce.
Jesus never said, “as long as you’re happy.” The pursuit of happiness can become a vain attempt to patch deep wounds with alcohol, drugs, pornography, broken relationships, or walking away whenever conviction gets uncomfortable. Real joy comes when the heart, will, and desires line up with God. False hope leaves a person drained when the Band Aid falls off, but Jesus tells the truth, and the truth sets people free. The great healer is not offering another cover-up. Christ is offering forgiveness, freedom, and real healing for every wound brought to him.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Follow Jesus, not the heart [32:19] The heart can feel sincere and still be wrong. Jeremiah’s warning does not make a person hopeless, but it does remove the heart from the throne. Jesus does not invite disciples to chase whatever feels strongest inside. Jesus calls for a cross-shaped trust that lets him judge desires before desires become direction. [32:19]
- 2. Freedom is not self-rule [35:06] “Be true to yourself” can sound brave, but it can also protect selfishness from surrender. The call of Christ is not a call to misery or joyless religion, but it is a call to give up anything that crowds out his kingdom. Just because something is allowed does not mean it leads closer to God. Real freedom is found when desire stops demanding lordship. [35:06]
- 3. God’s truth heals false identity [40:58] “Live your own truth” cannot carry the weight of a soul. God’s truth does not erase a person’s worth, it names it rightly. The Creator made no mistake, and human value rests in his design, not culture’s shifting approval. A lie may feel comforting for a season, but only truth can close the wound. [40:58]
- 4. Belief belongs in Christ alone [44:27] Self-belief cannot save, cleanse, or make anyone new. Human strength eventually runs out, and self-made righteousness falls apart under pressure. Christ gives what self-effort cannot produce, grace received by faith. The victory over a life belongs to him, not to a better version of human confidence. [44:27]
- 5. Happiness cannot be the goal [49:11] Happiness becomes dangerous when it justifies whatever gives relief. A person can gain comfort, escape, or applause and still lose the soul. Biblical joy is deeper than mood because it grows from delighting in the Lord. Obedience does not kill joy, it teaches joy where to live. [49:11]
