“If Matthew is giving us a series of policies and procedures, there are policies and procedures with a profound idea about God underneath him. We often talk about Jesus as if he's present in one discrete place at a time. He is here in my heart or there at the altar or up there in heaven. Matthew's text gives us a more complicated picture. Jesus is also slinking around in the murkier places in between us. Christ is in the gaps and in the places where lives touch. Christ is in relationships themselves. It may just be Matthew's way of saying what we hear in other places that God is love. And wherever love happens or fails to happen, something in God is all caught up too.”

“Lately, I've been thinking about what my educator taught me about Jesus. Because Christ, it seems to me, is our educator here too. In all the messes and the tangles of life done together through all the ruptures and the repairs, Jesus is in the midst of it all. Nudging us toward our neighbors, around us, and within us, the ones we'd rather avoid. Nudging us patiently through the discomforts the risks and out through the other side.”
