Luke 11 brings Jesus from a public rebuke into a private lunch, but the issue stays the same: the light is shining, and the problem is not God’s failure to give enough evidence. Jesus is the lamp God has put on full display. The problem is dim eyes and hard hearts that cannot or will not see.

Jesus accepts a Pharisee’s invitation and then intentionally does not do the ceremonial handwashing before the meal. The Pharisee is astonished, because this was not about germs or hygiene. This was about the tradition of the elders, the made-up system that treated the home like the temple, the table like the altar, and ordinary food like a sacrifice. The Pharisees had taken something God gave to priests in the temple and turned it into a burden for everybody. The tool Jesus reaches for is not soft speech. Jesus gets out the hammer.

Jesus’ harshness is not cruelty. Jesus was intense because the problem was immense. Nicodemus shows that even a Pharisee was not beyond hope. Paul shows it even more. The former Pharisee, hostile to the church, was knocked down by the hammer of Christ and raised up by mercy. If God can save Saul, God can save anyone.

Jesus calls false religion what it is because there can be no repentance without the knowledge of sin. The handwashing issue exposes a deeper truth: nobody can wash himself clean. The outside follows only after the inside is made new. Christ alone cleanses, forgives, gives a new heart, and brings freedom.
