“``Christianity flips the whole thing on its head. Christianity doesn't begin by saying, do you believe in a first cause, an unmoved mover, a creator behind reality? And then step two, do you believe in Jesus? John's gospel is so radical because what John is saying is, clear the deck. Here's the only question that matters. Who is Jesus? Who is Jesus? Because if you can see Jesus, you've seen God. And if you see God, you understand the gift of the gospel of grace.”

“And maybe you're like, no. No. No. I know. I know that. I know he's not in short supply, but your mindset is not that God's a miser, but that he's a manager. He's like your business manager that says, after you work, then you get your paycheck. And so, you know, you you go, well, God, I read my bible today. And God's like, well done, thou good and faithful. Here is some grace for thee. You know? You go, Lord, I signed up to serve at VBS all five days. All five days, Lord. You know? It's like, grace. Here's more grace for you. You know? But listen, friends, the simplest translation for the word charis, grace, is gift. Grace is a gift, not a wage. Grace is not a reward for good behavior. Grace is not compensation for a good religious performance. Grace is a mind blowing, undeserved, completely lavish and excessive gift.”

“Do you wonder what God is full of? You know, like, you you and me, maybe just me, when life is full and somebody bumps you, what spills out is irritation. Right? Anyone relate? When life is full, I'm boom. What spills out is sometimes I say things and people go, wow. That's what you really think about the situation. No? Or that's what you really think about being like, oh, it just came out. Right? You bump a glass, water spills. What happens when you bump God? What is God full of? John says, from his fullness, he gives us grace upon grace. That's just amazing good news. The message paraphrase says gift after gift after gift.”

“I don't know if you realize how powerful it is for Jesus to show us a god who is here. Not a god who's lost sight of you, not a god who's forgotten you. I know. I know. I know that there are so many moments in life where it feels like that, And it feels like you're invisible, that God doesn't notice, that God doesn't care, but Jesus shows us God here. Before you even knew how to call his name, God came for you. That's the good news. Amen?”
