Jesus declares that he did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets, but to fulfill them. Matthew 5 refuses the idea that God’s commands were a problem to get rid of. The Law is righteous, good, and holy, but it cannot make anybody righteous by human effort.
The hunger for happiness points to something real that God put inside people. The Beatitudes say that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled, satisfied. But cravings can get aimed at things that cannot feed the soul, like reaching for dog jerky when real food is what is needed. Sin promises satisfaction, but it leaves people empty and slowly dying.
Matthew presents Jesus as the new Moses, but also as one greater than Moses. Moses went up the mountain to receive God’s Law, while Jesus goes up the mountain and speaks with God’s own authority: “You have heard that it was said... but I say to you.” Jesus does not merely interpret the Law from Moses’ seat. Jesus is the God who gave the Law and knows its full meaning.
Jesus fills up the Law, cram-packing it with the heart-level meaning God always intended. The command against adultery reaches deeper than outward behavior into lustful craving. The command against murder reaches into anger and hatred. The tenth commandment exposes coveting as the heart problem underneath so many sins, because people crave what does not belong to them.
Legalism uses the Law to compare, burden, condemn, and leave people hopeless. Grace uses the Law to reveal spiritual poverty and bring people back to Christ. Jesus shows that no amount of cutting off sinful actions can finally fix the sinful heart. The problem goes all the way down, and the wages of sin are death.
Christ fulfills the Law in every way. Jesus obeys its righteous demands perfectly. Jesus also fulfills its curses at the cross, becoming sin for sinners so that they might become the righteousness of God. The bread of life gives what striving can never earn: eternal life as a gift received through faith.
Jesus satisfies the hunger for righteousness because his body and his righteousness are the true food of the soul. Faith is the work God requires, not another impossible attempt to make oneself right. Christ calls those trapped in lust, hiddenness, addiction, workaholism, or any other false satisfaction to repent, receive forgiveness, and say again, “Jesus, save me.”

Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus fills the Law completely Jesus does not shrink God’s commands into manageable external rules. Christ reveals that the Law is full, deep, and aimed at the desires underneath visible actions. His authority reaches beyond behavior into the hidden places of the heart. [63:29]
- 2. Cravings reveal a deeper hunger The hunger itself is not the enemy, because God created people to hunger and thirst for righteousness. Sin twists that hunger toward things that cannot nourish or satisfy. Christ invites every misplaced craving to become a road back to the bread of life. [74:12]
- 3. Legalism burdens, grace brings hope Legalism tells people to carry the weight of righteousness alone, then condemns them when they fail. Grace tells the truth about sin without leaving people in hopelessness. Jesus exposes spiritual poverty so that faith can receive the kingdom as a gift. [56:50]
- 4. Christ bears every curse deserved The cross is not merely an example of love; it is where Jesus takes the curse pronounced by the Law. The sinless One becomes sin so that guilty people can receive his righteousness. This exchange ends all confidence in self-made righteousness. [73:16]
- 5. Faith receives what work cannot earn The question, “What must people do?” meets Jesus’ startling answer: believe in the One the Father sent. Human work earns wages, but eternal life comes as a gift. Christ himself is the food that endures to eternal life.
