Bible Reading
Matthew 21:23-32 “And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, from where did it come? From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From man,’ we are afraid of the crowd, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.”
[24:57]Matthew 21:12-13 “And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”

[47:50]Observation questions
- What question do the chief priests and elders ask Jesus in the temple, and how does Jesus respond to their question?
- In the parable of the two sons, what does each son say, and what does each son actually do? [26:15]
- What reason does Jesus give for saying that tax collectors and prostitutes are entering God’s kingdom ahead of the religious leaders?
- What features of the temple system made forgiveness and access to God harder for poor people? [28:50]
Interpretation questions
- Why might the religious leaders have been more concerned with protecting their authority than with recognizing John’s message or Jesus’ work? [37:38]
- What does the first son’s change of mind show about repentance? How is repentance more than feeling sorry or speaking the right religious words? [44:47]
- Jesus connects his authority with accepting the sick, poor, and rejected. What does this show about the kind of authority God values? [38:31]
- If a faith community becomes “a place for the perfect,” what kinds of people may be kept at a distance, and what does that reveal about the community’s understanding of grace? [32:20]
Application questions
- Where is there a gap between saying “I will go” to God and actually stepping into the work God has placed in front of you—at home, at work, in the church, or with a neighbor?
- Is there an area of your life where you need the first son’s kind of change of mind: an honest turning around followed by a concrete next step? What might that step be this week? [26:18]
- Rivalry asks who is first, strongest, included, or left out. Where do you notice that way of thinking shaping your relationships, social media habits, work, or political conversations? [34:36]
- Think about people who may feel ashamed, poor, broken, or out of place around church. What could our group do to communicate that they belong before they have everything figured out? [43:52]
- When someone is difficult, defiant, or upsetting, what is your usual instinct: to control, withdraw, win, or respond harshly? What might patient presence and calm redirection look like in one current relationship? [41:10]
- God’s power is seen in building relationships, offering affirmation, and meeting people where they are. Who in your life may need that kind of grace from you right now, and how could you offer it in a specific way? [46:23]
