Bible ReadingJohn 1:35–5135. The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
[42:32]36. The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
[42:39]37. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?”
[42:43]38. And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
[42:52]39. He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.
[42:55]40. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
[43:02]41. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
[43:09]42. He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
[43:15]43. The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”
[43:24]44. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
[43:31]45. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
[43:34]46. Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
[43:43]47. Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”
[43:49]48. Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
[44:00]49. Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
[44:07]50. Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”
[44:17]51. And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
[44:19]Observation questions- What different actions lead people to Jesus in this passage—John the Baptist pointing, Andrew bringing Simon, Jesus finding Philip, and Philip inviting Nathanael? [57:38]
- What does Jesus say and do when the first two disciples begin following him, and how is his response different from simply giving them information about himself? [46:34]
- What details in Nathanael’s words and Jesus’ words show both Nathanael’s blunt skepticism and Jesus’ personal knowledge of him? [01:03:31]
- What changes in Nathanael’s response from verse 46 to verse 49, and what does Jesus promise him after that response? [01:05:21]
Interpretation questions- Why might Jesus begin his conversation with the two disciples by asking, “What are you seeking?” What kinds of heart-level desires can be hiding beneath a person’s interest in Jesus? [52:56]
- Philip does not argue with Nathanael’s skepticism about Nazareth; he says, “Come and see.” What does this suggest about how believers can respond when someone has honest doubts or objections about Jesus? [01:05:43]
- Jesus calls Simon “Peter,” meaning rock, at the beginning of his journey. What does this reveal about the way Jesus sees a person’s present weakness and future growth? [01:02:49]
- Jesus says Nathanael will see “greater things,” then describes heaven opened over the Son of Man. How does this show that Jesus is the One who brings people into relationship with God? [01:08:39]
Application questions- When Jesus asks, “What are you seeking?” what answer rises most quickly in your heart right now: security, control, acceptance, clarity, success, relief, or Jesus himself? What might that answer reveal? [47:19]
- Where are you most tempted to manage life so carefully that you do not have to feel vulnerable? What would it look like to bring that specific area to Jesus in trust this week? [52:07]
- Are there good gifts from Jesus—such as peace, answers, provision, healing, or direction—that you may be seeking more than Jesus himself? How can you pursue relationship with him in the middle of that need? [53:06]
- Nathanael discovered that Jesus had already seen him before he came looking for Jesus. Is there a failure, fear, doubt, or part of your story that you tend to hide from God or others? How does Jesus’ full knowledge of you change the way you can approach him? [01:04:41]
- Who is one person in your life who may be searching, skeptical, distant from church, or simply waiting for an invitation? What would a simple, natural “come and see” invitation look like for that person? [01:10:41]
- If you feel more like Nathanael than Philip right now—full of questions or uncertainty—what is one practical way you can keep coming to see Jesus rather than stopping at your questions? [01:06:35]
- Jesus names people not only by what they are today but also by what his grace can form them to become. Where do you need hope that Jesus is still shaping your character, faith, or calling? [01:03:04]
