Jesus the Door and Good Shepherd: Hear His Voice

John 10 comes right on the heels of the blind man receiving sight and being thrown out of the synagogue. Jesus does not move on to a random new subject. Jesus speaks into that very moment, where a man has been kicked out of one flock because he would not deny the One who opened his eyes, and by faith has now entered another flock.

The image of sheep fits because God does not choose the lion, the horse, the wolf, or the elephant to describe His people. God chooses sheep. Sheep are needy, stubborn, easily frightened, and often willing to keep walking a familiar path even if it leads to desolation. Psalm 100 calls God’s people “the sheep of his pasture,” and Isaiah 53 says all have gone astray like sheep. That is not insulting as much as it is honest. The sheep need a shepherd.

Jesus presents a contrast between the true shepherd and the false shepherds. The religious leaders should have cared for the flock of God, but they acted like thieves and robbers. The thief uses trickery. The robber uses violence. The healed man had just seen that in real time, because the leaders did not celebrate the work of God. They accused, threatened, and threw him out.

Jesus enters by the door because Jesus is the rightful shepherd of the sheep. The sheep hear His voice, and He calls His own sheep by name. The shepherd does not drive them from behind. Jesus leads from the front, and the sheep follow because they know His voice. That voice has to rise above every other voice, because the world is full of strangers, counterfeits, and false shepherds who do not come to help the sheep but to steal, kill, and destroy.

Jesus also says, “I am the door.” The door is the access point to safety, rest, and care. In the wilderness, the shepherd would even lie down across the opening, making his own body the door between the sheep and danger. Jesus gives security inside the fold and nourishment in the pasture. Jesus does not merely promise life later. Jesus came so His sheep may have life, and have it abundantly, a life that is not just long, but rich.
