Scripture Anchors Us: Jesus Is Our Cornerstone

Ephesians 2:19-22 sets the church on the firm ground of what God has done in Jesus. Paul says believers are “no longer strangers and foreigners,” and that changes everything. The text moves people from being outsiders with no history, no inheritance, and no legal standing, into being fellow citizens and members of the household of God. Jesus does not simply save individuals from sin. Jesus creates a new family from former enemies.

The word stranger carries the weight of not belonging. The word foreigner carries the weight of having no right of citizenship. Paul says that Jesus changes both conditions. Christ gives full knowledge, full legal standing, and full embrace. The gospel does not merely forgive sinners. The gospel gives sinners a home. The household of God is related by blood, but not ordinary blood. The blood of Jesus brings people near and makes them family.

Paul then turns to the foundation. The apostles and prophets are not the foundation as mere men. The word they proclaimed is the foundation, the truth that Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God, and that life is found by believing in him. Scripture anchors the church because Scripture keeps pointing back to Christ. Life does not need an anchor because it is easy. Life needs an anchor because grief comes, divorce comes, cancer happens, prodigals happen, culture shifts, and the future looks uncertain.

Jesus Christ himself is the chief cornerstone. The cornerstone in the ancient world was not decorative. The cornerstone shaped the direction of the walls, set the angles of the building, carried the stability of the structure, and determined the integrity of the whole project. If the cornerstone was off, everything was off. If the church builds on Jesus, the walls line up, the angles match, and the roof holds. If the church leaves Jesus and stops building on his word, destruction is all that remains.

Paul finally shows that God is still building. The whole building is being fitted together and growing into a holy temple in the Lord. God builds a church that is anchored in truth, settled on Jesus, growing, united, holy, and filled with his presence. The people of God are not spectators looking at a building. The people of God are the bricks, mortar, stones, and wood that God is using. Scripture anchors the church because Scripture secures the church’s connection to, and dependence upon, Christ the cornerstone.
